hi i just picked up my 300zx tt manual thats an import .

i am new to this car and have no mechanical experience and very little knowledge towards this car but am eager to learn.

i have loads of questions to ask but here are just a few if anyone could help :

1.The car has an evc installed ( which i believe is a fancy boost controller???)

can anyone shed any light on this and would the car have had to have been chipped to use it ?

2. what boost pressure can i run safely (my gauge is in kg/cm2)

3.the cars oil gauge is reading very low but i have no tapping knocking or smoke from the car are the gauges usually duff or should i get this checked out?

4.and finally i have a noise coming from the gearbox when i depress the clucth it stops and resumes as i release this. is this the thrust bearing or could it be anything else???

any help eould be much appeciated

hi jim!

i cant help you with 1+2 but loads of people on here will be able to help.

3 isnt much to worry about, it seems to be a common fault where the pressure sender dies and gives a poor or sluggish reading. if your really worried then fit an aftermarket gauge/sender unit. but as most cars dont have or need them and its running sound enough then it's probably fine.

4 sounds G/box related, it wont be a release bearing as the noise usually happens the other way round. there wont be much you can do (besides replace it for a recon) until it pops. check the oil levels and do a change, that might quieten it but, any damage will just be covered up.

the ECU is in the passengers foot well (if you didnt know) under a wooden panel. it might have some stickers or the screws might look like theyve been tampered with if it has a chip, other than that, its hard to tell until u open it up, unless you've driven a sandard one and can compare the 2.

it may well be chipped if its running a boost controller, fingers crossed for you anyway.

Welcome Jim :D

Of all those questions I can only answer the oil pressure problem.

The guage itself is not crap but the sender unit goes bad after a few miles and will need replacing. Basically the pressure when cold is fine but as the engine gets warm the guage reads little or no pressure at idle.

A new stock sender unit is around £80, yes £80

So many people fit an after market guage as it's cheaper. Personally, especially as my ZX is not heavily modified, I prefer the stock option so I replaced the Nissan sender - try Mike Feeney (MJP) in traders section.

Richard :smw:

I have something to say............ It's better to burn out than to fade away..... :tt2:

so the gear box is knackered then any ideas how long it will last and how much do you think for a recon know anywhere i can get one

cheeres jim zx

welcome to the club mate.

1) EVC is an excellent controller, although i dont own one to say so. what number is it? EVC-5 is the latest model - it has a screen in the centre. the older EVCs are just a line of knobs [sounds like our commitee  only joking guys ;) ]. Z doesnt have to be chipped, but its always wise to run an aftermarket or remapped chip when upping boost pressure as t'will start to run lean (very very bad). does the EVC display what boost youre running? im guessing youve got an older model tho.

2) on stock tubbies in good condition - 14.5psi is generally agreed to be 'safe' max, although some are running up to 16 with no probs  . your stock gauge (IIRC reads -7 to +7) will go off the gauge at 14.5psi - an aftermarket gauge is a MUST (unless your controller is displaying boost) and preferably in PSI. most aftermarket gauges are in psi.

sorry cant help on 3 or 4

hmm really depends on what else has been installed in the car. assuming a standard setup, bar aftermarket intake, exhaust and a decent chip (and your EVC), probably about 340bhp at the fly at 14psi. open to correction of course ;)

i know its got aftermarket intake and exhaust but the exhaust is knackered ill need to get a new one , ill have to find out wheather its chipped or not.

worth checking the intake (hope im not teaching you to suck eggs but pop bonnet, undo two bolts above nose panel and lift panel off) to see how old it is - a worthwhile replacement if its manky. like Fraser said, check the ecu (quite easy to get to) for any stickers or writing that may give away who installed it / what make it is. basic 'safe' ecu's (like JWT - a great starter) or a mapped one (like John Dixon - on this forum) are inexpensive - although the chip needs to be socketed onto the ecu board (after stock one is desoldered)

hey checked my ecu today theres a big sticker on it saying DATA SYSTEM-HIPER CHIP A TEMPT.CHIP does this mean it has been chipped at some point or do all ecu have this sticker ???? also the evc has written on it HKS ECU but has no number and no screen it just has a button to turn it on and a button like a two nob job stereo to turn the boost up and down , does this mean its ancient???

if it says HKS ecu then that would be something like the hks f-con but you would notice that when you removed the pasenger panel.

its possibly chipped best way to see is to remove ecu carefully remove the panel to the ecu and check inside if the chip looks like it has been socketed then its aftermarket if its soldered in then its the OEM chip, which i doubt it is as you have a boost controller, and unless there a numpty then they would of had it chipped!

:x: hi jim im pretty new to theres a good bunch of guys in this club + ive only met 7 members theres a gearbox on ebay in the automotive section if you cant get one on here with the guys just remember ( dont ask for stickers lol oops) + welcome
