I'm in the process of upgrading the speakers in my Zed. Now I'm fitting some neat and subtle Pioneer 6x9s in the door cards. But I also want to replace the rear speakers. Now I took the grille off and what I expected to see was a set of 6x4s. Instead, there's some kind of chassis there and round speakers are in place.

 

Anyone know if these were on a model change? Wanting to know what size the speakers are, they are Bose ones, so can only assume they've been fitted since the car was new.

 

I think they are 15cm, but cannot be sure, looks like I need to take out some of the trim to get it out.

no they have been fitted by someone else stock rears OEM are 6x4s

hmmmm oh right. I'll take a pic in the week and wack them up. Might take the chassis out and get some 6x4s. The speakers in there at the moment are shafted. They crack and click.

i've got jbl 6x4's in mine top speakers and run @98db where most others around 94db

as kev said jbl 6x4s are best bet not to cheap though IIRC i payed £50

i think motorworld are doing a deal on them at the mo

i just made a mdf frame and stuck in easy to find 6.5" three ways sounds good enough for me

I got the JBL's. You might as well buy them and save cutting holes and messing about as they go straight in.

Some imports have round speakers in the rear,usually when the Bose front mid speaker is fitted below the radio/ cd area.

The assembly they sit in is very good as it is a ported box, i would fit some upgraded round speakers if I where you, less hassle than tying to get some 6" x 9" to fit so nice and have such a good tight response.

minw has round speakers in the back

I have a 1990 import turbo.

Just replaced the rear speakers.

They were round Bose, in a ported box designed for round speakers, box shaped to fit.

So that lot was stock.

Also have Bose centre console speaker cover but speaker has gone.

Replaced the rears with Alpine components - SPS171A. Perfect fit, tweeter mounted on lower edge of rear window frame.

Very very happy with the results.

Bugger of a job though. Lots to be taken out to get to the speakers and boxes.

Out of interest, has anyone left their small amplifiers in when replacing the original fit speakers? Or did you remove them?
