Play in Diff

There seems to be quite a lot of play in the diif, is this normal? It's just that if I'm in a high gear & coasting, the thing buckaroo's a bit!

Does this mean that my diff is cabbaged?!!!

PS. My diff is from an auto but the car is manual.

i have no idea why all of a sudden diffs seem to be the thing to go, they are very good units on these cars. It is most likely something else.

how do you mean play in the diff?

well, I've had the car on the ramps & I can turn the prop by quite an amount without the wheels even moving. THere is probably a certain amount of play but it seems quite excessive! I,ve checked everything else such as the prop, gearbox, cv's etc & they all seem fine (ie. no play in them!).

This worried me as well and I even bought a used, low mileage diff.

The play was slightly less in the diff I bought.

This seems to be normal and I guess I just hear it more,

after replacing the rear subframe bushings with hard ones.

how do you mean buckaroos?

these diffs are very very strong units. Even stronger than the famous ford 9 inch unit. And they are bigger, so it really is a very rear problem then, God i think nissan used this exact diff in the 300 that won its class at lemans.

shaunmac I think what your describing is less to do with any backlash in the axle/diff and more to do with the engine not running smoothly in that freewheel off load cruising mode.A slight misfire or uneven running (many causes) will give a bucking feel to the car when in high gear and off load,if the diff was worn to the extent you you felt, when driving I would expect it to be noisy also, my advise is to check the smoothness of the idle and running up to about 2000 rpm see if you have an air leak or a plug problem maybe.

THe engine runs as smooth as silk although it does tend to rev slightly higher, say about 1300 revs. I've converted the car from auto to manual. I'm wondering if there's some subtle difference in the diffs or perhaps it's the engine mountings are knackered! Who knows!!!

Shaun - the diffs are different in their ratio between auto & manual, that much is for sure.. so perhaps that is part of the issue?

According to the manual there are two models of rear diff that may have been used. The R200V which has a ratio of 4.03 and the R230V which has a ratio of 3.69. It is not blindingly obvious whether one is for manual and one for auto, or whether it's turbo or non-turbo. Nor is it obvious how to tell the difference without taking them apart. However, on the manual page PD-7 it does tell you how to measure the paly in the prop shaft.

there's should be no difference in diffs between manual/auto.

however the non turbo's have a different diff. with a smaller ratio.

But you won't be able to fit the diff of an NA without fitting the complete NA-subframe as well (and loose the HICAS)

I didn't know the diffs were different. I've just put a UK manual box onto a jap auto diff! Now you've got me worried!! although it seems pretty much the same as before.
