If i junk the cruise and hicas systems, what other things would i need to consider?

 

looking at ripping out both and adding hicas eliminator - will i need to block anything off at pas pump?

 

having a "plan to ditch it" day today! :dance:

 

will it affect any other systems?

 

just about to do another search so may answer my own questions in a minute anyway! :smash:

if you remove the hicas and fit an elinmator the pipes attach to the eliminator so you dont need to block anything off,not sure if there will be any electrical issues i think cruise you can just remove

was wondering if you could replace the full rear steering with something a little less complecated

 

ive been told that removing the hicas can make the rear end as trigger happy as a hillbilly

anyone else done the john dixon method of removing everything?

 

how hard is it to do?

There are a few options:

 

1) NA Pump: junk the lot, solenoid, safety valve all pipework. Total PITA to remove pipework and fit NA pump

 

2) Leave existing pump in place, but loop feed to soleniod back to tank. Can then remove solenoid, safety valve and pipework if desired.

 

2) Leave existing pump in place, but remove veins from back impeller. As above but more hassle and no real advantage. Slight reduction in parasitic losses due to not circulating fluid (negligable).

 

3) loop pipes under rear of car. Leave everything else as it is.

 

I'd go for option 2, then remove the soleniod and rubber hoses, leave the metal pipes under the car.

Removing it makes the back much more predictable, not more jumpy unless something is not fitted properly.

i did mine a couple of weeks back, its pretty simple really, takes a while though and lots of fiddling about under the car. (big thanks to JD for answering all my calls to ask questions)

Yes, you still need the bar. The easiest way is to cut the end off the bajo fitting to the solenoid, then jubilee clip a short piece of hose to that. Use a pipe cutter to remove the end or you'll get swarf into the system.

I take it that if the pump can be devaned that its not the Power steering (front wheels) so is it a separate system.

 

My car is a 93 with electricly operated Hicas ...does it have any hydraulic gubbins ?????

Use a pipe cutter to remove the end or you'll get swarf into the system.

The power steering pump has two sides to it, one drives the power steering, the other the hicas, you take the pump apart and remove the small rectangular vanes from the rear section. This means the front still drives the power steering but no drive to the hicas

Is there a HICAS solenoid on the RHS of the engine bay by the PAS fluid resevoir. If not and its the electric version, I think you just have to pull the fuse to disable it.

okey, dokey - had a look at this today - found the feed from the pump to the hicas solenoid - but cant find a link between the solenoid and tank???

 

where should i loop it back to???

Here you go bud, a bit shakey as its freezing out there!

Should be pretty obvious what I have done though:

Pipe cutter to remove banjo fitting, then short piece of 10mm fuel hose from pipe to reservoir.

No, iirc that hose goes to the hicas solonoid which you are junking anyway.

yep, i spent almost a day under the car removing every bit of pipework, including the rack (replaced with eliminator) and failsafe valve at the back.

top tip: get a set of bolt cutters to chop through the pipes so you can remove them in little sections. and have lots of rags ready to soak up all the fluid that will come out.

 

theres a small section of pipework you wont be able to get to without removing the ac compressor, not much though, maybe 30cm of pipe. i took it out when i junked my ac
