Well I may have been caught speeding yesterday by one of them shitey camera vans.

Not happy really, on the way to and from work on the A419 I always do 60mph because, 1 It saves shit loads of petrol and 2 I timed the difference between doing 80 all the way there and 60 and it was about 3 minutes in total journey as you always hit traffic the other end.

So I've been plodding along this road for a year now to and from work. Yesterday driving home following this lorry. He was doing 58 but it was good enough for me. So I followed him 10 miles into Swindon. As we were aproaching swindon he started to slow, more and more until he was doing about 48mph, this I thought was taking the piss slightly in a 70. So I dropped the old girl down a few notches and pegged it up to him and past him when it was safe. As I pulled out at about 70, because It is a fast moving road and continued to accelerate so some the twats in the outside lane who do well over a ton wouldnt plough into me. I looked in my rear view and the traffic that was moving fast slowed as I looked ahead Mobile Speed Camera Van on the bridge I was just flying toward at 80ish. Couldn't see it earlier as the lorry was blocking my view, and didn't see it when I pulled out as i turned to check me blindspot and looked in rear view mirror. Then only when I looked up I saw it and I was too close

I slowed up to 60 (speed limit is 70) as I went under the bridge and out the other side at the speed limit.

So anyways, do you guys think he busted me? I'm not sure how them vans work? It looked like the door was open and a filthy camera was pointing toward my lane on the oncoming side, but I went out the other side on the speed limit. Do they catch you oncomming? are the video or photo? and do they just see you comming then get a picture the other side? I have no idea and can't seem to find much on the net about them, all I can find is about fixed stuff and mobile guns etc, not the kit they have in these vans.

If I was caught, I would think at most I was 10 mph over the speed limit? what's that worth? It's hard to tell as I wasn't really looking at the speedo until I slowed.

Cheers

Steve

well mate for what its worth Ive known people get away with anything upto 80mph, so hopefully you were in that bracket.

I hope your right, I really do. Can't be doing with them points and a fine

Did you see the two white lines on the road surface? What speed were you doing at that point. If you were doing over 77mph then you may well get a ticket (official guidelines are speed limit plus 10% plus another 2 mph) also remember your speedo won't be 100% accurate and generally you are not going as fast as your speedo says. Finally if you have not received the notice within 14 days then it is highly likely that you wont get a ticket!

You might be OK if the Camera was pointing away from the bridge?

AS yampiedog alluded to 14days is actually the statutory 'Notice of Intended Prosecution'. If you have no letter within 14 days then you are home free as this must be served within 14days of commiting the offence! The other alternantive is that you're cousin from South America was driving, give them his name and address and tell them he flew home the day after the event in questiuon and see what happens....but i never suggested that one! :x:

lol, think that could get me in a little more trouble!

But thanks for the advise guys. I like the thought about my speedo being out etc hopefully it all adds up to me not getting a ticket. Problem is, I realised yesterday that I have moved house, and I have not yet sent off my log book, is there any way I can call the DVLA or whoever and get info on if any notifications have been sent to me?

cheers.

thought they were deemed inaccurate? Are they police operating the cameras in the vans or people employed to just work the vans? IMHO if they are not police, would be worth fetchin ur number plates off, driving up to them and chuckin one of two of tem off the bridge.... would hopefully discourage people from replying to the ad in the paper "Complete and utter ****er wanted to help government take as much money off people as they can. Must have experience of being a nussiance to society.... preferably at least 12 months or more working for the DVLA or post office..."

camera vans around my area are now becoming more stelth like ie no markings just doors open with the damn camera sitting in the back i have spotted these a few times now and am wondering as to the legality of them.

Camera vans and speed cameras are not operated by the police they tend to be Highways Agency although they still have the appearance of a police vehicle but definitely not police.

If You Do Get Fined It Will Probably Be Fixed Penalty 3 Points £60 Fine Unless Its Your First Offence And You Might Get The Course Where You Have To Go An Listen To A Copper Taking About Road Saftey

Good Luck

The people in these vans aren't coppers - just regular folk.

I once went back and took a photo of the bloke operating the big laser trap thing in there - he didn't like that.

If you had the *****cks you could just open the van and take all their photo evidence off them.

If you lie about who was driving and get caught you will possibly be done for perverting the course of justice at worst, which carries max sentence of life imprisonment. (Though you will more than likely get a big fine or a few weeks in prison or both).

The tripod and hand held cameras get you going towards them. Depends on what one but up to about 1/4 mile or more. I would say it was pretty unlikely that 80mph on a national speed limit road would get you a ticket. I would put money on it that the camera was set at 85mph.

As for the civvies operating the vans, as of recently they are now 'highways agency officers' (road police version of community support basically) and there is an offence of not obeying their instructions in matters of traffic, so I would not recommend trying to steal their film/equipment!!

If you get a NIP and think it was unfair then take it to court, but remember you risk a bigger punishment if you lose at court.

If you hear nothing after 14 days, you wont hear at all.

As for being reported in person; The officer does have to caution you but as long as he lets you know you are being prosecuted for the offence I dont think it really matters what he says, as far as I am aware.

Also the plate spraying stuff does not work, like most anti camera devices, it just makes loonies in saxo's etc... think they are immune and drive like idiots until they kill someone.

anyway they let you off for example if ur doing 35mph in a 30mph zone the way it works is that ur alwed to do 30mph plus 10% plus 2mph and thats about 35mph.for 70mph zone you should be ok if you were doing 80mph or less.

i actually stopped behind the open doors of one of those stealth tax vans while he had his camera set up i popped the bonnet of the sherpa van and sat there smug in a broken down manner and had a fag and a brew while blockinghis view of the road ..he was livid and told me i was obstructing the law ...i just said i had over heated and i was letting it cool down for an hour , nothing he could do at all ...........bstards if one of them is your neighbour ..let his tyres down

seeing as you weren't majorly over the limit (and of course, if they snapped you) you might get away with the speed awareness workshop. you still get the £60 fine but no points as long as you attend. i went to one last month and TBH it was quite enjoyable (although its there for a reason)

I hope you are a reformed man now Dave?! and never use heavy boots again. Dave

err well, yes and no. (more 'no' really) :D

http://www.safetycameraswestyorkshire.co.uk/ some information here and you can get away with it if u know how to coz i did they cought me doing 47mph in a 30mph zone had to pay somé cash to some one i know but did not got any points. good luck

What informed reading NOT

I mean all that bullshit about camera sitings and how well they are calibrated and that mobile cameras operate accurately in all conditions, only needing to focus on a wing mirror

Exactly what the scamera partnerships want motorists to believe - that technology is 100% infallible. That way you just admit all and pay-up.

Totally unbiased IMO :p

Richard :smash:

I have something to say............ It's better to burn out than to fade away..... :tt2:

Like the sound of the workshop rather than a fine and points!!! Just trying to fish out my log book to send it back, may have to pop round me old house tomorrow and ask the chap to forward any important looking mail!

Thanks for the advice and good lucks :)
