Mystery object bolted to rear inner arch

I was replacing the driverside rear speaker yesterday. When i got the speaker out i spotted a strange thing'ie bolted to the inner arch. It was a black box with Clarion printed on it. Anybody know what it might be? I think it's something to do with the sound system cause the original head unit was a Clarion.

    Mine had already been stripped out but I think it only works with the original system.

    most a disconected and you have to short some wires out in the plug to it,to get the rear speakers to work on an aftermarket system. there is a diagram on here. I think

    I think thats been done cause the back speakers work. Any recommendations for replacements?
