I had the shock of my life today when I put my foot down on the M1 and I didn't seem to get nowhere. I noticed that my turbo gauge was only moving from -14 to 0. Please, please, does anyone know what could have happened. Is it something that I need to get it into a garage for??

Cheers

Vijay

Looking on the absolute worst side of things, you have a siezed turbo.

do you know if there's anything I can do??

A siezed turbo isn't the easiest thing on the Z to check.

The turbo wastegates are mechanical so even if there was a problem with them, you would still be able to boost at 6psi or so.

I has exactly the same problem on my previous Z. Running on the motorway when all of a sudden I went to overtake a car and suddenly lost all power. My boost gauge wouldn't run past 0psi and there wasn't any power in any gear.

If all other aspects of driving appear normal on your Z but you don't get boost pressure under any circumstances then check the compressor housings of both turbo's for oil leaks.

You could also remove both inlet hoses and run the engine to check if there is air flow being produced from both turbo's.

Hope this helps.

I had the same problem and symptoms, one of the turbo's had seized.

This required a full turbo (both) overhaul!

Z's seemed to need this after appx 80k Miles.

Not sure if it is the identical problem to my mates he suddenly had only pressure upto zeroish, and really crappy running when he gased the car. It turned out to be a split vacum pipe to the ECU pressure sensor if you listened in the engine bay by the bulkhead on the drivers side you could hear air being sucked into the pipe on idle, when replaced the car ran normally again. The sensor was a black box screwed on the drivers side wing towards the bulkhead, with a pipe and several cables.

This is a possibility, but it may be what the previous posts are saying

Hey Welcome to the seized Turbo club.

Sorry bud, but that sounds like the problem to me, The split boost guage pressure line would only cause the Guage to go belly up not loss of performance.

And as steve said if you had a vaccum leak in the wastegate system you would still get up to 6psi with the mechanical wastegates.

Bear in mind the turbos feed off each other and are parallel so if one goes you get virtually no boost.

Best bet is too get both rebuilt if you are over 70K, price is about 650 fitting and then the price of the turbos that you want.

I think SE Nissan do stock rebuilds for about 1400 quid all inclusive.

Or you can do it the hard way like myself.

Just got the engine out yesterday, waiting till after Xmas to send the turbos to the states for a rebuild.

Z ya

Wait wait wait....

as others pointed out, you MAY have a seized turbo.....

but you may as well have a massive air leak, look closely at your intake hoses, intercooler hoses, etc etc etc.

I know because once I hit a fox (naaah, the animal, what are U thinking about) on the highway....and that badly damaged my left intercooler.

Before dumping big money down the drain...err, I mean a Nissan Dealer, check this one out first....and BTW, you done an ECU self test, right ?

Zee you

The split pipe to the pressure sensor would affect perfomance as the engine management system reads whether the car has boost and adjusts accordingly.

if it is a siezed turbo, would this be a good time to upgrade?????

It a good idea or you'll be paying for the turbo twice and the cost of removal and fitting twice

Upgrade to what??

There's plenty of choice out there for all different preferences of driving style.

There are many other things to consider when fitting different turbo's.

come on stevey i know you think like i do and feel the red mist coming over your eyes when the thought of those monster gt turbines spooling up and giving you over 800bhp muhahahahaha oh yes every penny and scam i'm pulling for the next eight months is going towards these beasties

Hey Tooley, I see your aiming high in the old hp stakes!!

The more hp you run, the quicker your going to shread those rear tyres during your dougnuts :-)

As for bigger turbo's and red mist...... yep, I can't deny it but maybe soon!?!?!?
