Yep, a lot of Zeds have this problem (mine included). I double de-clutch to avoid it :)

mines got quick shifter and sports clutch, and 2nd does "grate" a bit when cold. 5th seems fine though.

even so, gotta admit i would never go back to auto, i think getting my zed converted to manual was best thing i ever did.

after 3 auto boxes in 2 years :nono: :nono:

i had a manual conversion after 2 troublesome auto boxes, & my 2nd gear grates when cold, i'm gonna fix it when it breaks! & enjoy being reliable for now :)

Mine had been fine with a short shifter but it is a common problem.

A lot of people find changing the fluid to Redline MT90 cures the crunches.

had the same problem with mine 2nd when cold and 5th when hot changed gearbox oil and all is ok now. gearbox oil seems to be something that is overlooked in general maintenance, i couldn't believe the difference it made

well i'll blow that that theory out of window...... running with redline mt90 am on my second gearbox, as i rebuild the last one with all new bearings and a brand new 2nd gear baulk ring assembly and it still the same and that why i bought another gearbox at £475 low mileage 32000 miles out of a 95TT zed only to find it the same dohhh!! 5 th gear incidently didn't have a baulk ring so mabey thats why 5 th doesn't like quick changes at high speed, if you do it normally its fine w**kers nissan

Try putting thinner oil in mate that usually helps with the gears crunching. Perhaps u just had bad luck as to have two fifth gear synchros gone ?

4 th is fine, but there is still no baulk ring on 5th as per manufacturer migh fit another type of gearbox..........anyone ever fitted something else to their Zed..??poopra?? maybe

I've noticed this when changing from 4th - 5th at above 80-90mph. Never had any problems with any other gears. Just keeping the clutch in for a moment longer to allow the revs / boost pressure to drop down a bit solves it for me.

seems like its a standard problem and design fault with 5 th gear thats just what both boxes I've had do , they seem fine at normal changes but if you change quick at high speed it crunches

Mine old one only did that into 4th, the new one is absolutely fine.

andy what oil did you use, ep 90 or mt 90?

when i stripped the first box the gears looked perfect, no obvious faults with them, no teeth missing etc

Richard

In my old box I was using the Redline MT90, in the new one I've gone for the fully synth Silkolene SYN 5 75w-90 because it's cheaper. Did the diff at the same time with the same stuff as the old had been in there for 13 years !

mmm, dunt no what to do anymore with this pile of cack of gearbox, my missus nearly divorced me after buying another box just to find the same problem, 2nd gear is crunchy cold and ok warm, 5 th is ok at normal changing speed as long as not done quickly.

my first gearbox is sat in garage floor with every bearing replaced and a new 2nd gear baulk ring assembly doing exactly the same as this low mileage box thats in now dooohhh what to do ????

anyone ever fitted something else to their Zed..??poopra?? maybe

I will be fitting the R154 poopra box in mine, don't know if there's an adapter available for a VG30 DETT tho'??-these are said to handle 400Ibs+ of torque

We'll see! :o

Erm, buy my old one and make a good one from the two ? ;) Seems a bit extreme to me ....
