Looks like there's a few musicians amongst us... just out of interest what is it you all do?

Me to start with...

It's more of a hobby than an earner, but I play keys, and my main passion is dance stuff, particularly fond of Big-Beat, but since I got all the kit I needed (analogue modelling synths and the like) I haven't had the time to do much of that.

A few years ago a bunch of us at work formed a band to earn some extra pocket-money- we do covers of soul, funk, and some disco.

So...

What about everyone else?

:)

i produce, compose, engineer etc..

I gotta say. as I forgot before that I have big ambitions of creating something very different? I like to experiment by fusing dis-similar music together. I have a great track that I thin k any of you might like called "Man in the Corner" and its a fusion of D&B and electro rock. Sounds good and others who have heard it think so too. I wish I could link it somewhere and let you hear it and see what you think.

My mate who is a guitar teacher has been doing some similar things when I last spoke to him. Fusing dance type stuff with thread guitar stuff. Havn't heard it yet but might be seeing him on Saturday for the first time in ages so hope to hear what he's been doing.

can't play a thing, got of me tits with Dave Brock and Nic Turner many years ago, still not being able to play never stopped them

Hey Si, Let me know if you ever wanna do some stuff, I'm very versatile and write too :)

As a hobbie,

I use Cubase and Reason, download accapellas and mix em up, but can't be bothered anymore cause even if the sounds are phenomenal on my Roland i'd still need 10 grand worth of tube eq's, finalisers...... to get it to sound polished to my liking so i'm gona get me a acompaniment keyboard just like it was when i started :)

Christ - we could all start a Z band here!! No seriously, this is my other hobbie apart from my Z. Have been writting and producing, composing tunes for about 10Years now - have got a little home studio set up here with Synths, 2 old Amiga's for sequncing (But not used much anymore) Mixing desk, DSP effects unit + Rack mounted kit etc. Very much into Trance, Techno Dance stuff with influences such as B.T, Armin can Burren, Tiesto, Depeche Mode, New Order, Kraftwork - Aphex Twin etc

Gonna start doing some more soon as I get some spare time!!

Include PINK FLOYD to your list and got we the exact same taste in music.

Now that sounds like a plan.......

Cornwall is a long way to go for a jam?

I've been in a few bands. the last band was 16 years ago. We really thought we'd made the big time. got signed to noise records (Hell 'o' Ween were there flag ship band at the time) Cut a couple of single and laid down most of an album.

Did session with Tommy Vance, Supported Motorhead and few that made it as big as us. I was the front Man and according to Kerang I was The New David Coverdale and we played Rock Music for grown ups. I know what they ment because my vocal hero was the same man Coverdale emilated also. The Fantastic Paul Rogers.

Only problem with this legesy is any time we go to family events etc I'll hear it anounced over the PA that I'm up next singing.

PIC OF HIS CAR

Strewth, you've been Veilside tangoed! :) He's really gone to town on that! Looks like he's made a good job of it though, so although it's not necessarily my taste, I'd say good on him.

I play guitar to a fairly mediocre standard, mainly acoustic nowadays because I can never be bothered to get out the electric, and the pedal and connect it all together... oh yeah, plus my electric is one of the cheap Ephiphone Les Paul copies (I mean the £250 ones rather than the £500 jobbies), which goes out of tune for a pasttime, which gets quite irritating.

My acoustic guitar is actually quite nice, and far better than I deserve for my standard of playing (Larrivee D03-RE). It's got quite a Coldplay sound to it, although that isn't why I bought it.

I also sing and try to do a bit of songwriting, although not nearly as much as I'd like, and occasionally play with friends. That's mainly been in church, but we also just jam together and I'd love to try doing a pub gig or a bit of busking. But as with most people I suspect, it comes down to having the time. Music's actually my real passion, much more so than the zed, and one of the main reasons I now work part-time is to pursue that a bit more.

Sorry, bit of a long reply there. Seem to be quite a lot of people with a more than passing interest in music on here.

That is my wet dream my friend! I have a very small set-up , If I win the lottery thats what I'll have! People often forget it's the sound engineers and producers that make an Album famous. I'm totally fascinated by sound and how it all comes together in the right mixture of perfection. It's a very hard thing to do.

I recently bought an anniversary edition of "dare" by the human League..still one of the most perfectly engineered albums i've heard . I'll be laughed at, but i find a lot of todays music is too crashy bangy and full of modern tricks .

By the way the Synthesizer IS an instrument. And a very important one at that.

and now to dispell your dreams..

you dont need 50 grands worth of stuff to make good music..

fatboy slims first album was made on an old atari and an akai s950 sampler..

most bands dont use modern synths etc, just drums and guitars..

its all down to the engineer you use, they work the magic for you and never get the recognician they deserve..

however as a producer you have to learn when to leave a track alone, more is less in most tracks you can have 96trk set up and onlu use 6 tracks....

Exactly the point I WANTED to make :) It's like good cooking. But I'm learning all the time.

Depends what equipment you use, I've got TR-909 samples in my XP-30 and they sound nothing like those on dance records because they've all been processed with something before release, probably TL-Audios Tube EQ's Comp's yada yada

It's that pro polished sounds i'm talking about, I'm sure fatboys tunes sounded crap before the engineer came into action and done his thing IMO. I'm still wating to see a pro software engineer, to be convinced.

nope sorry fatboy engineered his own stuff.. for his first album.. lo-fi and all!
