Hi guys and gals

I was just wondering, are these engines in our Zeds as delicate

as I'm led to believe?? This forum is full of horror stories of things blowing up etc... that I'm rather worried about doing anything exciting in my beast incase i like kill it and then can't play in it any more.

I'm currently looking at changing the cambelt and tensioner (myself... GULP), water pump, hoses etc..., what else will make me ba able to drive this beast with confidence???

Basically, what can you do to improve reliablity, without total rebuild?

cheers

I think all those horror stories are from people that have badly maintained zeds and done stuped things like run too much boost for their setup.

If you don't go silly with the boost (15psi max on stock injectors and tubs) and make sure you have a decent chip along with filter and exhaust, decent oil, changed regularly, then you won't have the sort of problems you have read. Of course, if the previous owners have abused the car by not doing the basic mainence then you may be in for trouble.

Doing a major cam belt service is a good start, but also get compression tests and make sure your car is in good health before you start to mod.

Spent time on any forum and all you hear is horror stories, on any car.

They are tough and they are over engineered but they are often abused.

its Japanese(top 8 most reliable manufacturers in the world are all japenese) and its built to handle far more power than it puts out as standard, and waaaaay more power than any everyday car could handle, but it demands proper maintenance !

If your 60k service is due, then do everything that is required (not just the cambelt).

personally , id say dont go over 13.5-14psi , and always use optimax!!

Yes always use optimax if you increase boost! 13.5-14psi is a good safty area with 15 at the limit. I have been running mine at 15 for the past couple of years and no probs, infact when it was on the rolling road the A/F ratio was ok and engineer was happy red line the car (Thore).

Agree with this.

Most performance cars of the age of ours have had a few owners, and there's no guarantee that they have serviced it properly and havent thrashed it.

However, take your time selecting, and then service them correctly, and only mod if you're sure their sound, and they shouldn't be any more unreliable than a Micra :)

Of course you are going to hear about people's engine problems. You dont need advice when your engine is running well. I think we need to start a "My car is going well" thread.
