Hi guys and girls am looking at selling my skyline soon and am really considering a 300zx! Am just trying to find out some info on them. Already done a search and found the excellent buying guide but could someone tell me what the difference is between a SWB and a normall 300 is? And am i right in thinking that jap imports are called Fairlady z and uk cars are just called 300zx? Does anyone know of any other buying guides or mag features where i could find out more?

cheers and excellent forum by the way!

welcome mate!

swb is 2 seater and "normal 300" is 2+2. jap imports are called fairlady z. there are some other small differences. japs have square rear number plate as opposed to uk rectangular one. japs dont have fog lights in rear bumper, normally people will use one of the reverse lights for this (looks better IMO).

uk spec do have wider rear wheels 245 opposed to jap 225 (i got uk wheels for rear of my jap).

i would say both cars are as good as each other really.

some insurers are fussy about imports, but on saying this by shopping around you can get good quotes.

im 27, with 3 points, full ncb, slightly modded zed and i pay 367.00 full comp.......this is alot cheaper than what my v6 calibra was costing.

hope this helps a bit, there are some guys on here with alot more knowledge than me though, so im sure they can point you in the right direction.

one last thing, jap headlights are rubbish!!!!!!!!! you can see more with a candle!

Gaz!

r32boy,

Check out Practical performance magazine, ran a very in depth buyers guide for the 300zx over for or five pages, should answer most of your questions, call or mail them and order ISSUE TWO ( see pics below)

thanks for the info guys! I guess the insurance would be group 20 same as the liners? Your insurance is bloody cheap Gaz300zx! is there a big price difference between jap and uk cars? am i being realistic in looking at 3500-4000 grand for a turbo with targa? dnt mind man or auto.

where are you in essex?

at the mo in east tilbury in thurrock but moving to dunton at the end of the month where bouts you mate?

if you can i would go for a manual, although others would say auto all the way.

however after having an auto that kept breaking i got it converted to manual by jeff at zedworld, and it was deffo the best thing i done to date.

also £4000 should get you a decent car. check out the for sales section on this forum, i think someone is selling there TT for £4250 that sounds a good one.

yer...check your insurance quotes first...

they vary on this site from about £370 to £2100...

depending on what you declare or where you live and so on

I would deffo go for a manwell Jap import mate. Why have a sports car that drives itself? :D You will usually pay more for the insurance on an import. If you offset the differance between Jap & UK insurance, against the welding up of all the rust on a car thats been in this country for 15 years. Your still quids in. IMHO of course.

so manual looks the way to go then was leaning towards the auto as neva had one before but think id miss a gearstick to much, plus is the auto any slower?

are there any insurance companies that like the 300zx? am wiv adrain flux atm they were the only ones who would insure me on a liner!

Thanx for all the responce guys and soz for all the questions but from my experiance you always get good honest advice with a owners club.

near southend, pop round if you have any questions

I'm with adrian flux for my 300 (I think some others are also) so ask them first.

Get quotes for a Jap and a UK.

I got a UK one because I was finding it very hard to insure a Jap one or it was silly money, some say differently, can't just be me though....

UK Manual with leather (if thats what your after) are quite rare It took me over 3months to find one.

Good luck m8

I'm with Admiral, very good quote from them, they've never been beaten so give them a try, depends on a lot of things of course :)

I have owned a Manual and an Auto, and let's just say after a while of owning my Auto, I thought it was brilliant at first, NOTHING can replicate that feeling of kickdown when you floor it at 40mph - amazing, but I must concede one of the things on my to do list when it comes off the road is a Manual conversion, I miss it a lot, so if you can get a Manual, a lot more fun... Autos are easier to drive if like me it's a daily drive around a lot of congested areas... but I'm going to get it all sorted and have it as my weekend/show car like some here.

You won't regret it mate, but make sure you TAKE YOUR TIME. I can't stress this enough, wait for the right one to come along, it will come along, just be patient and wait for a gem to come up for sale and you will be a happy bunny!

Thanks for the info peeps ill try getting some quotes for both uk and jap, just read that they are insurance group 18 (uk car) so might be cheaper than the liner (Group20)! Am 24 wiv full ncb so fingers crossed i wont get my pants pulled down!

there seem to be a few about at the mo but ive got to sell the liner first so am in no great hurry thanks for the advice kay ill def take my time and get to know more about the car before i buy.

Russ am def up for meeting mate have yet to have a real good look at one in the flesh and yours looks the nuts, let me know if your free one weeknd or evening?

Also are there any planned meets in the essex area soon?
