I've seen a lot on here recently regarding knackered autoboxes, so I wondered (as you do) who's had the highest mileage out of their origonal autobox..

And along with that (only applicable if you've had a failure, obviously), was it a pre or post '91 (which apparently had a revised auto for improved reliability)? Jap or UK? Aftermarket oil cooler? Oh, and how it died (I gather the most popular failure is losing anything above 2nd).

I look forward to your tales of autobox woe :p

Mine made about 32,000 before it crapped out. Lost all drive.

Think I got about 60k out of mine!!

When it did go I got a metallic whirring noise from the bell housing which lasted for about 3 weeks, then took it to local petrol station and on the way back I lost all drive and had to switch off the engine for a minute then start again, luckily I wasnt far from home and only had to restart once.

Yes Mr chunkster, but the one you destoyed that you got off me. Had done 120,000 + miles (without inccident) before you got your hands on it.

P.S 1994 UK with oil cooler. Don't think chunk fitted a cooler to it?

You guys scare me - I've 160k on mine at the moment and I'm looking for another 5 years out of it (and the car) before I scrap the whole lot. Thing is, it's an NA and used daily and never (white lie) driven in anger.

 

...will it last?

about 70 k i think lost all drive £980 to right it tw ting thing only doin 30 at the time :slap:

Mine had refurb at 74000 miles its got 130k on the clock now and going good probabaly until I start running it again after the engine rebuild then it will probabaly blow up. The way forward must be a manual conversion though.

140k from a 92 series 2 UK TT. full service history original tubs.

 

Trouble begain with a sensation of a misfire sometimes also a slight burnt oil smell from time to time that I put down to an oil leak onto an exhaust. Then total loss of drive for a few seconds while parking one day then some hundreds of miles later while going at 30mph it suddenly had no drive. Whining grating noise in neutral. Drive comes back for a few minutes at a time and you get home if you are only a mile or two away but its touch and go with re starts and waiting. It even drove onto the transporter no problem to go off to get the box changed. Oil smelled bad and was burnt. Still have the old box round the back!

Think they last fine on the NA - no heat from turbos etc.
