my Zs had this problem for several weeks now but just recently its been getting louder/more often.

the harder i put my foot on the throttle, the louder this strange ticking noise becomes - originating from behind the steering column of all places, as far as i can tell. im not sure if its audible from outside the car - maybe it is. i seem to hear it as i drive through a narrow built-up area too.

the noise is a 'plastic' ticking, not a metal ticking if you know what i mean - almost sounds like a wrist watch ticking, but about ten times as fast. problem gets worse as the engine warms up.

performance has also dropped a lot too :( :(

boost seems ok - aftermarket gauge reads 11psi max, oddly with boost jets removed and knackered boost controller switched off (although this problem occured while i was on jets - but only after having the jets installed for a long time so im sure its nothing to do with them)

Apexi SAFC shows throttle position accurately from 0% to 100%

any ideas anyone as im stumped?

i have just developed same problem this weekend. the ticking noise starts just as the boost hits 0 and is only audible from 0 to 10psi. my performance aint so cracking recentley either.

could be a small leak between turbo and downpipe/precat (usually the gasket), which gives a sound which can be described as ticking/blowing when accelerating and also causes a drop in performance.

Another side effect is that the O2 sensor-readings for the side the sounds comes from stays at a low voltage most of the time. (can be checked with a conzult)

In some cases it can hardly be heard from outside the car, but only when sitting in the car or when standing/laying under the car while someone revs the engine.

If your TPS is out of adjustment there is a relay near the steering column that will click as you put your foot down, I have heard this before and it sounds very similar to what you have described.

Cam belt idler?

This can tick but you will get a intermittent flappy sound as well only at idle. Soon followed by a sound that is very expensive and makes you cry!

ive been trying to find out what that ticking is for months, it went away when i pratted about with tps and now its back and car is running like a bag of shite again,

cheers for that

No problem bud, glad to be of help.

yep as eric says more than likely a exhaust leak from the manifold or downpipe

what sort of job would this be to fix Greg?

find out where the leak is to dave, get it on ramp start car! go underneath and listen to where the leak is from its more likely to be from the downpipe itself or the turbo-manifold either pre-cat side or drivers, its sometimes easy sometimes hard due to the heat of the turbo. bolts can snap bolts seize and can be a right handful!

best thing is to take it to a garage and get them to take a look and go from there, hopefully its just the downpipe blowing rather than the manifold

ok Greg thanks for that. although ive had this problem (or rather my car has) for several months, its only very recently that is got much worse. the car was de-catted last week (2-piece kit so AFAIK doesnt touch the turbo side) and i was told that it was a perfect fit. is this a coincidence - decat then noise and crap performance?

not noticed any dreaded blue smoke yet (although i get a bit when i first start her up for the day then it goes away - makes my heart stop)

EDIT: ok just taken 'it' (not calling the Z 'her' at the moment  ) for a drive and the blowing noise is definately audible from outside. it seems to be slightly worse! this also makes me think of another noise ive been hearing - a constant whistle all the time - like having your window a tiny bit down and wind whistling in.

also while decelerating (but not necessarily braking) comes another whistle! sounds exactly like squeaky breaks but im not braking!!

is this all down to an exhaust leak nr tubbies? im really not a Z fan at the moment

hmm this sounds familiar they wernt megan pipes by any chance or copies

as i fitted a set for blackmagic not to long ago and the fitment was terrible causing the driverside to blow,by the way if your decatted and have had pipes fitted they run directly of the turbo

they were PHNW pipes - apparently custom-made for the 300. Zedworld said they were a perfect fit (as was the pipes' reputation). the pipes didnt replace the small part at the turbo (that some people replace with 'divorced' versions - sorry I cant remember what these bits are called) - they only replaced the centre-section.

ive had this problem since before fitting the decats - but its never been this bad. :(

oh i see no probs then if its worse then id go back and check for tightness and that there making a good seal if there worse since fitment go back and recheck and whilst at it check manifold area aswell as there is surely an issue with it somewhere ;)
