Is 35 too old to contemplate taking up martial arts training?

Don't keep fit TBH drink, smoke and sexual activity is about the only "Keep fit!!!" that I take part in. ;)

I'd recommend Muay Thai Boran for punching, kicking and elbows (good luck finding a Boran teacher- nearly everyone is just plain Thai kickboxing), and like Monghanroyal said Brazillian/Gracie jiu-jitsu for grappling. I'm doing Ninjitsu atm. its bloody hard but I love being a ninja, you get the black outfit and everything.

Yeah, forgot about Muay Thai, got a lot of time for that. Proper hard core fighting, no messing about with Muay Thai. With reference to your Ninjitsu, bet it hurts when you try to burst through the walls! British brick is a bit harder than japanease paper walls Lol!!

is there any styles that involve drinking vodka ??

Bee Gee-itsu Vinzinoku, i think ;)

my brother done kung fu at about 27, pretty fit fella always into body building etc... and the training was so intence that he just couldn't hack it,lol

i guess at the end of the day it depends on your teacher, like this guy, luckily for his students he's pretty ok :x:

With respect to your bro but big weight body building is just not any good for most sports. Done properly as extra training to support whatever the sport is its good, but most people get sucked in by the 'get massive' syndrome. It just makes you big and unflexible and doesnt train your heart and lungs. Makes you look 'ard though so hopefully nobody will mess with you!

Drink out of heavier pint glasses to get bigger arm muscles. Shout louder to improve lungs and jaw muscles. Always squat when you go to the bog to improve legs, and squeeze harder to improve pelvic floor. Fall out of bed on both sides to harden body. When you feel fit and ready start throwing yourself down the stairs. After 6 weeks of this you should be ready for your first white belt origami class. :x:  I'm available for fitness consultations at a reasonable rate. Also do programs in preperation for special events.

Erm if you want a serious answer then I genuinely think one of the best things for your average person is long walks in the hills/mountains, not easy in London I guess but worth a trip out in the Zed. you'll be knackered after only an afternoon if you've never done much before. Also swimming is great as its not concussive on your body and trains every part. I'm not a fan of swimming pools myself (stroke, turn, stroke, stroke, turn, yawn, etc I like the sea) but better than nothing.

Id say take up tennis. Bonus is girls play.

As to the fighting, my schooling was in the army and they trained us in a veriety of disciplines. most special forces blend Juditso with something like Kung Foo. Emphasis on getting your opponent on the floor, but being able to strike using all body areas.

As to what discipline does what I have no idea. What I was tought was never go down, bite, kick punch, gouge stab or shoot. If you cant do that, then make sure you can run faster than your mates.

The most effective form of martial art for someone who is unfit is, without a shadow of a doubt, Wing Chun Kuen (aka Wing Chun). Try and get a Sifu who is from the Yip Man/Ip Chun lineage.

For those who care, Wing Chun Kuen is what Bruce Lee was trained in before he went off on one with Jeet Kune Do. It is the art of the famous one-inch punch. It is unparalleled for close-quarter combat and requires next to no flexiblity or cadio-vascular fitness. And Chi-Sau is totally addictive.

i thought the one inch punch came from the shaolin monks, i dont care who you are or what you know try fighting one of themn ****s

they will kick your ass

I did Shotokan Karate for, ooo about 3 months.

Was doing alright until Sensai decided we all should do some free-sparring. I ended up against Sensai himself, he caught my punch, twisted my wrist, pushed and...

...schlock!...

Out popped my shoulder. :hurl:

In case anyone's interested in the rest of the story...

An army medic dude decided to try to relocate it there and then. With both of us lying on the floor on our backs, he was to my right with one foot on my neck and the other foot on my hip, pulling my arm out so that when release it would drop back into the socket.

Which it didn't do. He later said "oh if I'd realised this had happened before I wouldn't have tried to put it back in" !!! :xxx: Great job he did of assessing me beforehand! Anyway...

Ambulance came, and they put in a drip to give my fluids and painkillers. Or they tried to- rather then the needle going into my vein, it went straight through! So the ambulance medic had to pretty much sit on my hand to reduce the amount of bruising that would occur (the back of my hand still went black).

Eventually got to hospital and they sorted it out properly.

So... I gave up Karate after that! :D

LOL. been training for more than 21 years now. numerous broken bones, cuts, bruises, sprains etc etc.

could never give it up tho!! sure it will kill me one day :smash:

What's the best stylee to go for then? Kung Fu, Karate or Tai 'Lady Boy' Kwondoo? :D

Or should I just do what I did as a kid...cut up a broom handle nail a short length of bath plug chain imbetween to create DIY SOS Nun Chuckers and then flail them around making Brucee Lee cat noises until I knock mesen out? LOL :D

Have you tried the "Kamasutra" ?

Eek,ouch, oooohhh,oww!

(best monty python voice):- tis mearly a flesh wound, I'll bite ye to death

That used to happen to one of my mates every week, he was so used to it that it didn't hurt anymore. He just used to pop it back in every time I popped it out!! Used to freak me out everytime it happened!!

Another important consideration is the quality of the club you train at. This does not mean that expensive clubs in posh sports centers are the best, usually it is the opposite, Some organisations are nothing but big money making setups making some people at the top very rich indeed despite giving you very poor quality training. Stick with the traditional styles that people have mentioned here, watch out for some of the new fancy rubbish that some sports centers try to peddle as martial arts, you will find yourself skipping round in a mix of yoga and ballroom dancing LOL. Find a club where the instructors are committed to teaching you in the true spirit of traditional karate or whatever you choose to do, Make sure you get individual attention and hands on training with your instructors and that your not simply left to your own devices.

Your gonna ache like fook timmy old boy but it does get easier after about the first 10 years

Paul

ps. If its just your lass slapping you around thats bothering you, It would be cheaper to pay the Big Mac to go down and sort it for ya

Ninjitsu is a good one to go for i used to do it, but it does involve pressure points and you can end up getting seriously hurt.

Wicked, who was your instructor? We might have met, although I only just got back into it, last time I did it was 2002.

My motto is dont do anything you cant pronounce, If your mouth and tongue cant cope what sort of chance has your body got?? :D :D

Wing Chun kung Fu or if you want very easy stuff to remember then american kickboxing straight to the point, ive done chinese kick boxing but american is very easy as you dont have to learn that much steps. but the ultimate is wing chun (close combat). there is grapling which if mastered proply is xlnt. i thinking of getting back into it myself just get time I would prob go for Mhuy Tai boxing. After watching that movie (Onk Bak) damn.
