Hello all, Newibe needing advice,

I have liked the 300zx for years and now finally (or at least in a couple of months time) I may be in the position to buy one. However before I take the plunge I just want to make sure that i'm not going to end up regretting it.

basically I need to get an idea of how much these cars cost to run. I am aware that I would be unlikely to get much more than 20mpg out of it but how much on average does it cost to keep one serviced and maintained. I currently have a BMW328 and I put aside £100 a month which covers tax test tyres and servicing for the year. Is a 300ZX likley to cost much more than this?

Also I live in the North east of England, does anyone know of any decent sepciallist in the area for servicing and pre purchase inspection? My local Nissan dealer is Reg Vardy in Middlesbrough and I wouldn't trust them to change a light bulb never mind look after a car.

Finally (sorry for all the questions), where is the best place to buy a decent one from? Most of the ones listed on Ebay or in Autotrader look a bit tatty. Is it worth going to one of these companies that imports them direct or should I buy privately?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Chewie, are the N/A cars much slower?

Also what mods are you refering too? One of the things that put me off N/A is that it is much easier to get more power out of a Turbo.

I have a NA and I love it.

It is quick and exciting, the only problem is that I want more power now.

TBH the idea of a N/A car is becomming more appealing in terms of less to go wrong and lower running costs.

Indeed, get an NA and when you're happy with it, look at getting an SC and some NOS.... :)

Were you from (Waterford?)

We should organise a south Ireland meet before summer ends

I bought an NA - I could have got a TT for the money i spent.

I have driven a TT before and I test motorbikes for a living so I'm no stranger to fast things.

I'm very happy with my NA. One day I might get a TT but after 18 months of NA ownership I'm still chuffed to bits with it.

I've got an NA for sale in the north east you may be interested in. Here's a link to the Cars for sale post.

Let me know if you fancy having a look at her.

Cheers

depends on what you would fix yourself, for instance, fixing a burst water hose costs nothing although a long and PITA job, where as taking it to a dealer would cost hundreds!!

i have had niggles with mine, but nothing i would call major, especially for a 12 year old car. havnt spent more than £100 ish (and that was brake pads) but if i had taken it to a dealers or a garage it would have been £1000s

its just your luck, if you get an older car that runs well, chances are that all the niggly bits that would have broken will have been fixed, where as buying a later model might not be far off wearing out.. and leaving you to fork out for the spares..

David, It looks like a nice car for the money. Not totally decided just yet and it will be a few months before I have the cash anyway (or at least the money to afford the credit!)

I post up if she sells. I'm not pushing the sale too hard at the moment, I still enjoy driving her! As I say, let me know if you fancy a look.

Buying my Zed 2 and a 1/2 years ago proved to be a very costly experience. I had a Zed mecahnic come with me to check the car out but even he couldnt have forseen what was going to happen within the next few months. Turbos, rad, gearbox to mention a few issues and it all came to 000's of pounds. All my savings went and the CC bill started to rise.

About a year ago, I got so fed up of spending money with other people to fix small issues on my car that I decided to start working on it myself. Like Si says, it is a very scary thing to look at but once you get to grips with what goes where, its really not that difficult. Its just that every job you do involves you moving 200 other items before you can get to it.

You'll find that the £20 a year spent subscribing to the club is well worth the money, the amount of information you'll recieve back is amazing.

HTH

Cheers
