....just been for a three and a half mile swim in the sea! Swam across the plymouth bay, nearly got run over by a 15,000 tonne ferry on the way back. Nice though, could see people drinking in the pubs and pointing out to sea wondering why the f*ck some one was swimming half a mile out in the bay as it was getting dark. Me reckless....nah. The currents round the headlands were a bit dodgey though ,could only just swim against them. Bit nervy feeling, like when you know you're going a little too fast round that corner in the Zed. I want to take a waterproof camera next time as you see views that no one would ever see normally.

15,000 tonne? Must have been the Bretagne then...but thought she was a bit larger than that.

Agreed, the currents across the sound around high and low waters can be quite strong. Good on ya for giving it a bash.

I used to swim competitively. Best source of fitness about.

Wasn't able to lift it so couldn't weigh it properly  Can't remember which one, the big new one I think. Swam from devils point to the far side of the Hoe and back. Did from Hayle to St Ives in cornwall last month. Don't do it competitively, just keeps me fit when there's no surf! :hyper: :hyper:

New big one is around 40,000 tonnes iirc (Pont-Aven).

Wish I lived down in Plymouth have a few friends down there. Used to live in Southampton for a while and loved it down there. Glastonbury is crap.

I cant swim, and that makes me kind of nervous at this JAE time of year!!!!

I grew up in SW Cornwall. I'd move back if there were any jobs there. Most people in my home town do seasonal work in the summer for pittance and then go on surf hols in the winter to somewhere hot. Idylic for a while but then you get bored of living like sh*t, I left ten years ago. It would be hard work keeping a Zed on the road! Once I'm out of the Marines I'll be full time in gloucestershire so I'm close to Bristol for the jobs. Still close enough to N.Devon and S.Wales for a surf trip.

Only times I've been in Glastonbury is for the festival. Not been recently though as the fence is too fortified these days!

15,000 tonne?

Nahhhhhhhh. The ferry was only 13'000 tonne, but Macca was on board!!

I think you must have lost the plot? But fair play to you. Fookin hell man thats a risky business at night. One thing puzzles me tho' How the fook did you manage to weigh the tanker whilst still swiming?

I think it's great! Everyone thinks I'm crazy down in Hayle as hardly anyone else would do it. I spoke to my step dad about it and he said that 30yrs ago they used to do it every year as a big competition. I also swam round burgh island from challaborough which is near plymouth. When I got out an old boy form Bristol came down for a chat. He's part of a club that swims a couple of miles in the severn channel every week. Now you would think that these are young people into their fitness, etc but the majority are actually OAP's! One of them is 89 yrs old!! They also swim between the Scilly Isles every year. I was gobsmacked. How many young people do you know who would be fit enough to do something like that? let alone an 89 yr old. Says something about the fitness of the country and all that.

Dave

ps wasnt swimming at night, just it was dark when I got out
