I've been talking to an auto gearbox specialist yesterday, and describing the fault/symptons with my car. We were talking on the phone for quite some time, he's been recommended to me by at least five people already, so I should be OK with him. He recons that, basically, the box is fooked!!!! But he can recondition it, and will give it a 12 month warranty.............. For the tidy sum of £1300!!!! And it'll take about a week.

On the second hand side, my normal garage, who I've used for a number of years, said that they wouldn't fit a second hand box, and most garages would be the same (they then recommended this guy I've been talking to).

Oh yeah, it's also going to cost me £100 just to have it transported to Newark. So I'm not a completeley happy bunny at the moment

The biggest problem with a second hand box, is that no one can guarantee it to last for any length of time, infact it could blow within a few days, you never know. So even if I could get one for a good price, then I'd have to find someone prepared to fit it, and also have it transported to there. On the whole, I could end up spending a hell of a lot of money out, and end up with a crap box, and nothing to show for it (on the worst side that is, but that is a very important thing to consider)

I was in the same boat Dave, Manual conversion is the way forward, auto boxes will just keep on giving you more & more problems :(

similar dilemma for me these last few weeks...whats to do....recon or manual or 2nd hand...you have my sympathy Dave... shame they wont fit a second hand box can't see how it would come back on them....i sourced a 2nd hand box with uprated cooler delivered for a £1000 less than a recon

Dave if you gonna spend that much on a recon, you might as well get an uprated one like Ryan does. i know where you can get everything you need, you just got to find someone to do the work.

Talk to MTL, he has just reconditioned his autobox and I am sure he would help you out

Thanks Mike, I'll have a word with Mat.

I wouldn't mind a manual conversion, but how much work would be involved? And what sort of price could I expect to pay for all the bits?

I think all in you are looking at about the same as a recon autobox

Around £1500 all in

or as said above uprated autobox,

from what i found out its still gonna be over £1000+.....also there are waiting lists...unless you get lucky with a scrap manual car which hasnt been spotted by the rest..

i was in the same boat as well Dave. Its basically either £1500ish for a high-spec Baggins-box, or £1500ish for a manual conversion. I took the second choice and haven't looked back since (only cos I prefer manuals anyway)

Well I've taken the plunge and have gone for a rebuild of my existing auto box. This will be upgraded internals and a large oil cooler.

I considered the manual conversion, but with the prospect of sourcing all the parts, and that I'd be in the same situation as with a second hand auto (having it fitted/no guaramtee), although I wouldn't mind a manual, I opted for the upgraded auto instead. I'm a bit lazy in that respect and I do like my auto. So with a rebuild and the large cooler, I should be OK for quite some time............... and you never know, I might even go for some more power ;)

Thanks to everyone who has sugested things and offered help, it's all appreciated   You guys are the tops :D

Especial thanks to the one who put me onto the garage that its going to ;) :duffer:

And I'm hoping that I'll be able to pick her up just in time for JAE (Sunday)
