Well, i know its fun and all but the handling on our Z seems dangerous. We almost went head first into this other car in it today. This thing needs something drastic to help it.

One of the reasons is that u cant see which gear ur in, this results in it bring in 2nd going unnoticed until u put ur foot down where it then spins.

The tryes are still on the ones from japan, how much real improvement will expensive tyres make to it?

Also traction control, this being the expensive option, but i can see it making a big difference. From what i heard launch control is arse on an auto so how much is a racelogic setup like ur lots but without the launch control?

I know this may sound like im being all negative and that but it IS silly. MY mum is currently trying to make my dad sell cos of it. Now this needs radical attention b4 i let it slip away.

Very safe reasonable tyres are Bridgestone SO2 or SO3s, also Good year F1s are rated similar. I have heard several people mention about some Jap tyres not even being legal over here.

Lanuch control on an auto, I would have thought it was un-necessary too. TC It is a big big safey improvement.

My car has been very safe for the whole 7 years I've had it. If your's really feels dangerous or doesn't go in a straight line when breaking, then something make be up with the suspension, tension bars etc. Obviously the pads may need checking. The ABS also has a self test system if you think it's not working.

I have Hard KUHMO tyres on my Z when I first got it. Very dangerous. After a puncture I upgraded to SO2's.

They grip better in the wet than the KUHMO did in the dry.

SO2's, ill take a peek for some prices and SO3 too. They sound good. The auto shifter light is dangerous too, flooring it in second is insane, gonna have to take the dash apart when its parked up for the winter the speedo needs doing aswell so it cant be that much hassle to takr the shifter apart and put a bastard bright light on the indicator

Jez,

I'd like to point out that I recall a 10 minute period in the last 7 years when your car has been about the least safe place I've ever wanted to be.

Clarkey,

Having said that, it does sound as though there's something up with the car. Get it checked out or driven by someone else with a Z. I suggest you don't get them to do what Craig & I did when we swapped cars and then proceeded to race each other !

I gotta ask.. What difference does it make flooring it in 2nd or in drive.. it's still gonna drop down to the lowest possible gear anyway..

well in second it will be in second and in drive it would be in something else and the box is normally set to hold so it doesnt pull those silly antics when u pull away wink.gif

:)

I had brand new Japanese spec Yokohamas on mine when I imported it. Whenever it rained, the rear end would do its best to overtake the front. This was worst when the tyres were cold, but didn't improve much after a long run either.

I eventually changed to Bridgestone S02s (the Yokohamas still looked brand new despite being on the car for several months) and it was like driving a different car.

If you're talking about standing starts, and the power/hold switch is in the normal position..

Lever to D - floor it from a standstill. box will be in 1st, then 2nd, then 3rd, then OD

Lever in 2 - floor it from a standstill. box will be in 1st, then 2nd..

Of course, as you say, if it's in Hold then it will start off in 2nd and switch to 3rd at about 3000rpm I believe.

Clarkey,

The reason why your rear end is desperately trying to overtake the front end is because the Jap spec tyres are made of a very hard compound. Very suitable to Japanese streets (where it hardly rains and you rarely get a chance to put your welly to the floor). However, in the UK it is a different story - as you've found out. Best suggestion I have is to change all four tyres to UK spec tyres. I swear by SO-3's (SO-2's are getting increasingly more difficult to get as they've been discontinued). Excellent grip in the wet and perfect directional stability in the dry as well.

Cheers mate,

Danny

Might I suggest a Nissan Skyline VSpec, as even the daftest of Denim-wearing ex Top Gear presenters look good driving one.

S03s are very good tyres, I can vouch for them. S02s have now been discontinued very few places will have them, if any and certainly Micheldever don't do them anymore.

Danny is spot on, I was very disapointed with the handling of my Z, to be quite frank it was shite. Changing the tyres transformed the car, I'm pleased to say it now sticks to the road.

T/C is fantastic, very reassuring. Well worth every penny, launch control is useless on an Auto.

Can't understand your dad's problem with the gear selector, I only use Drive and reverse, it's a Jap Auto isn't it? Put it in drive and then click o/d off and flick to speed to keep it on cam when the mood takes you.

Hi Guys,

Just a quick note, you shouldnt been on JAP tyres.

They dont have the kite mark, and hence are illegal to use in the UK. Should you have an accident the insurance wont pay up.

Also the JAP tyres are different compound to the UK for the differences in the climate. IE hotter weather.

Change the tyres, for UK ones.
