Hi guys,

I have a prop shaft rattle that I want to get sorted.

I am currently in negotiations to get a good second hand one, but I have a couple of questions.

Is there any difference between NA and TT shafts? and any difference between manual and autos?

Also do I need to get specific bearings?

I have an NA Auto, if that helps anybody answer these questions.

Thanks, Mike...

IIRC yes - the front half of the shaft is different between Auto & Manual (I think the Auto one is shorter), and the back half different between NA and TT (they have different bolt patterns if I recall correctly)

Also do I need to get specific bearings?

Courtesy list two centre bearings - one for the NA and one for the TT, so that suggests those are different too.

Have you tried changing just the centre bearing? That's not too bad a job really, and may well cure your vibration, unless you already know that the universal joints are bad?

starting point is replaceing the rear auto gearbox mount. It sags and causes the prop to run out of line. The result is a vibration - starts to be noticeable at high sppeds (NA 80+) then gets progesssively worse untill you can feel it at low speeds. At low speed on a smooth road, it feels like you've a flat spot on a rear tyre.

I've replaced mine about 4 years ago (cars a daily driver NA) and it's feeling like it needs replacing again.

Costs about £50 and it's easy to do as long as you have jack to support the gearbox on whilst doing the change.

Good luck.

There are four things which go on the propshaft as everything gets progressively older and saggier. Rear gearbox mount (some pics here) and the centre bearing and also the bearings in the UJs themselves and lastly the CV joint at the diff end.

Rear gearbox mount and centre bearing are easy. Nissan say that UJ bearings are not replaceable but if you find a prop(er) shaft engineer, they are.

The most difficult is the CV joint at the end. The only people I found who claimed they could do it were Reco prop in Luton who said they had identified it as the same sort as on the Audi Quattro.

And yes, TT / NA have different fittings at the diff end so beware. Also beware if you order a TT prop for your 2+2 from the US to save money. They don't do the 2+2 TT in the US, just the TT SWB and there is a different length prop.... Please don't ask me how I know

yes there is a difference between props as i have found becouse my prop has a bad vibe and have been looking for one .turbs do not fit none turbs and the obvious long and short wheelbase are different lenghs.there are a suprising amount of props around the breakers so try for exact car and measure the prop on your car.the exhaust has to be dropped when fitting the prop.

Thanks Lads, I have a bit to think about now.

The first thing I need to do is diagnose exactly what is wrong. Is there anybody near me (south east) that knows what they are looking for, who wouldn't mind having a look under my Zed?

It's obviously worth a few beer tokens.

Thanks, Mike...

NICE ONE JACK I THINK YOU HAVE JUST SOLVED MY PROPLEM :hyper: MINES DOES JUST THAT!!! WILL HAVE IT CHECK OUT

...you'll find it's worse when the cars been standing for a while. If I didn't use mine over the weekend, it'd be bad on a Monday first thing, but got slightly better as the car was used through the week. Evidently it sags more when it's stationary, carrying almost the full weight of the box. On the move, the weight is dissipated.
