rattling/grinding from gearbox at low revs

Hi, I've just fitted a manual gearbox to my 300z & have found that when in gear & accelerating, there's a grinding noise when revs between 1000 & 1500. Has anyone come across this problem before? Also found that the thrust bearing is knackered!!! I'm getting cheesed of with my Z!!!!!

Hi Shaun,

I've had exactly the same problem ever since I bought the Z. When I took the box off, I realised that there was LOADS of play in the main shaft bearing. I've yet to change it, so I can't comment on how tricky it is to perform.

Regards,

Oh mate, not good!

I have had vibration on mine from day one, however gearbox rear main seal was Phuket and it's currently in for a Bob the Builder effort! wink.gif

Hope it gets sorted!

On the "I'm getting cheesed off with my Z" front...what can I say, not just me and Az then? LOL biggrin.gif

Sounds like the layshaft bearing.

Does it make the noise in neutral?

If so does it stop when you press the clutch?

It's a big problem with the 200 box.

Give in and buy a Supra...or RX7...or GTO....or NSX......... or whatever biggrin.gif

Well, when I'd fitted the box to my car, I noticed that the drain plug was loose, so loose that gear oil was dripping out of it. SO now I'm wondering if the previous owner has been driving the car around with hardly any gear oil in it!!! I can't imagine that the scarpyard I bought it from is going to give me my money back somehow! especially being as it's taken me over a month to fit the bloody thing! I got it from A1 Jap spares!

Hmmm, could be a Ronnie Rebuild on the horizon ! frown.gif At least you've done all the difficult bit now.

True, but it's already cost 700pounds!!!! I haven't had much luck with cars & this is proving to be another bad buy!! Saying that, the gearbox was obviously knackered before I put the thing in, as was the thrust bearing but trying to get my money back from a scrap yard is like trying to get blood out of a stone, I rekon I've got no F****g chance!
