Ok fella's, the first to say sell the Zed get's it, :mac1: It failed the mot last week on rear roll bar drop link's, and the hicas rack track arm's, thats it, well chuffed. All done an dusted. Having recently splitt from the missus though has left me running the house alone, which most of you will know aint cheap when there is two of ya, my Zed is my everyday car now, and the fuel consumption is killing me to an from work alone without any use over the weekend. So here's my question...........Gas conversion????? need i say anymore i wonder? Can I? how would it run? and more importantly, what will it perform like?? Can you run a turbo'ed car on gas?? Any idea's??

i got a combo van that runs on gas, which is unbelievably cheap at 33p a litre! :dance:

 

this got me thinking about doing the zed too. ive had quotes around the £1800 price range, and none have mentioned any probs about converting a turbo car.

 

would be interesting to get others ideas on it though?

 

let us know what kind of prices you get. i have seen the kits advertised on ebay for about £500, but if done by a garage they need to be installed by a "professional".......apparently you can do them yourself though! :confused:

Been toying with the idea for a while on mine, some LPG converters will tell you they can convert a turbo car just fine, however whether these conversions are fine is a matter of opinion. The turbo cars that have been converted are usually low pressure single units like ovlovs etc. Some people have reported problems with LPG running too hot and harsh and hence causing damage to valves and valve seats, I can only imagine on a turbo car this problem will be a lot worse, with our comparatively high pressure it will be even worse again, and with our high running temps I think you may get a tripple whammy of bad news. I shudder to think what would happen if you shoved liquid petroleum gas through a hot manifold into an incredibly hot engine under high boost pressure.

 

However I've also thought if you fit a boost controller you can essentially turn your turbos off, and probably run LPG without problems. Cos of our low compression you'll get less power than an NA zed (prob. around 200bhp), but you could have a 0psi map in your controller that allows you to run your LPG system, you could then switch back to petrol in order to run your turbos. Im guessing with the reduced economy of LPG you'll get about 20mpg (remember your turbos will be off so less fuel will have to go in but that will be offset with the lower mileage you get from gas), but your petrol will cost half as much.

Used to have it on my old MotoX van....Worked a treat :)

Have heard of the Na big engines being converted but never a twin turbo....good idea about turning the boost off...might work :confused:

Although the extra weight of a gas cylinder and equipment could reduce your handling and performance :(

can i sujest getting a realy cheap runabout

...chop it in and get an NA. They are so cheap at the moment that assuming you get a good price for your TT, the extra cash the swap will generate will go some way to paying for fuel... and you'll still be driving one of the best looking cars on the road - oh and it won't break down as ofter either.

It would take a long time to recoup the £1.5 - £2k costs of conversion, even if its possible or not on the zed.

 

Get yourself a cheap runaround instead. Then you can also put the zed on a classic insurance 2nd car policy and save a fair bit of money there too.

A gas conversion will cost you £1000-£1500 to have done.

 

The car will be quite a bit heavier and gas causes 10%-15% reduction in power and a 10%-15% drop in MPG.

 

So you would have a car doing 14-16mpg around town and 18-22mpg on a run.

 

I suggest you get a diesel run around for £1500 and use that. You will save on fuel as they do a lot more than 18mpg

If you don't live too far from work get yourself a chep moped!

I know I'll be laughed at but the cost of running one is ridiculously low.

Cheap run-about is probably the best option i think, in my position if the gas conversion was to reduce the motor to a sizzling lump a metal i'd have to right the car off i think, expensive experiment and a lot of foo**ng about. Just sold a scoot too, bought it off a m8 for £500 notes and sold it for a grand, thats the only reason i didnt keep it. At the mot the c/o levels were at o.6 percent so it aint running rich.

couldn't you swap your turbos for some NA manifolds and ECU? converting to NA would save a bit on your bills initially and the NA would handle the gas conversion no problem. Admittedly you'd have a slower car, but you'd still be driving a zed and its nothing a little nitrous wouldn't fix

I could'nt live with the idea of a non-turbo Zed!! Thats no disrespect to the n/a boy's out there but i live for that whistle from the harry huffer's, (puffer's). Thats where the fuel bill come's from. If i could learn to keep my foot outta the go!! pedal i would probably half my fuel bill. LOL.

Get a 2CV. 50 mpg, almost no insurance costs and your more likely to win the lottery than get it nicked!

But could i stand the immbarrasment?? LOL

Yes, I have had one. Cost me £400, and worth every penny. Not nice if you have to use motorways, as the windows fly open at 50 (no I'm not joking). But great for going from A to B and virtually indestructible.

Err, yes. Sorry. I meant the engine is indestructible. True a falling leaf will put a dent in the bonnet, but you trying driving one to death.

 

I'm sure there's only about 6 moving parts in the whole car.

Very good point, obviously the large tanks would take up too much space, I was thinking about one of the toroidal tanks that goes in place of your spare wheel. Although this would intrude on boot space and then Im not sure where the spare would go (especially if you've replaced your jaffa cake with a factory OEM wheel).
