Auto to Manual convert

Well, I've converted my car from Auto to Manual but what a bloody job and a half!!! Getting those hydraulic pipes in was a bugger as well as getting the pedals & clutch booster in position!

There's a couple of things to do like connect the HICAS clutch switch instead of the Park brake switch, Neutral switch instead of auto inhibitor switch etc.

I'm testing it out on the road tonight so it should be interesting! Wish me luck guys!!!!

So how long did it take and what did it cost overall ? I'm very interested as this could be my final mod (and what a way to finish!)

It took me about a month because I kept finding bits missing like bolts for the flywheel, clutch plate. Hydraulic pipe for clutch slave cylinder. I had to drive to Manchester 3 times in the end. It has only cost me £700 in the end although I have to get gear oil & a gear knob too.

There is also a matter of the electrical side of things which isn't too bad if you know a little about electronics.

There are circuit & wiring diagrams on this web site which I relied on!!!

If you do decide to go down this route then I'll be able to give you advice.

Saying that, I haven't actually driven the car down the road yet, I might find loads wrong with it!! At the moment, the only thing that's 'flashing' is the POWER light which indicates that the Auto Box has a fault. I can't say that I'm too bothered about that at the mo!

You realise that your gearing on final drive will still be as for an auto unless you change the diff as well. It might be a bit high geared off the line but probably wont make too much difference except for drag racing if you are so inclined! Might toast the clutch

I thought that the diffs were the same! According to the service manual they are.

Hi Andy, ur mirrors down at Mikes. By the way, if ur interested i have all the bits needed to do the auto to manual conversion. The kit includes:

Gearbox - done only 50k with 30 day garantee

Master cylinder

Slave cylinder

All pipework needed

pedal box

Flywheel

Pressure plate

Clutch disk

Throw out bearing

All for 700 quid.....

Tempting... if I had the money!

Kash,

Hold on to that stuff mate, I feel my cheque book quivering !

lol- Ok mate - dont take too long now will ya......

Shaunmac

You are probably correct on the final drive ratio - I thought the auto was on a different diff ratio to give the 27/28 mph per 1000rpm in OD top.

Willie

Silly question...

...what will the effect of the different cams and turbos be swapping from Auto to manual transmission?

Just a thought.

Tim

More torque at the bottom end, more wheelspin and less top end speed. Sounds OK to me, but I have some ideas for moving the torque a little further further up the rev range.

Kash,

I've thought about it and it's a goer.

And just incase you don't read this ... you will have mail very soon !

Shaunmac,

Welcome to the auto to manual converted club. Its pretty exclusive - i think you're only the 4th member in the UK. I had mine done last year and it rocks! You're a braver man than me to do it yourself, i got SE to do mine.

Power light flashes on mine too. Final drive is same, and manual ratios lower so more performance at the expense of outright top speed (yawn).

Cheers,

It does feel bloody quick actually, the torque is amazing & the car gets to 80mph like a rocket ship!!! The only problem I have now is that there is a rather loud rattling noise when the revs are low, say 1000 to 1500. Perhaps the prop is vibrating & touching something near by, I don't know. I'll have to check it out.

Could just be your exhaust that is in a slightly new position and fouling on something.
