As title really, are 2 smaller subs better than 1 larger one?

I got some neat little enclosures off of Ryan a while ago, they fit left and right in the boot but the 8" subs in it could do with being upgraded. Its quite hard to come by 8"'s but have found some Kickers in that size. I wired the 8's into a 2x200w amp and they weren't all that so then I bridged it to a larger sub I had in a box and just sat it in the boot. That sounded ALOT better. I don't want to be wasting my time with better 8's if they are never going to match 1 bigger sub? Its just the 2 enclosures that fit L+R leave plenty of space for the targa's, where as the bigger sub wouldn't.

Thanks for any help.

........and while I've got your attention; whats the best route into the car from the battery for the power cable ?

take the cable throught the wing on the passenger side , should be a plastic cover next to the battery, take off the kick pannal and make a small hole in the rubber grommet indise the wing, use some stiff wire push thought the hole. oh and if you don't want the 8"'s and the box let me know, 8" will give u a punchy bass and 10" & 12" will give a fuller lower bass

take off the cover at the back under the wheel arch and your see where the loom goes throught into the kick pannal area , passenger side footwell

make a hole in the rubber cover and u should be able to push a stiff wire through, the wire should come out just to the top left of where the ECU sits

You will never get 8" subs to drop real low unless they are very expensive, but you can get them to sound nice. Those kickers should sound o.k. and aren't too expensive.

If your boxes are completely empty then before fitting the subs in put some loft insulation in there from b&q, stuff it right in at the back and then put in your subs. It makes the subs think the box is bigger than it actually is and you will get good punchy bass.

If you really want a good kick, can you not enlarge the holes in the box to a 10" most 10's use a 9" hole ! 8's imho are too small to provide decent bass. They are o.k. for a very small car with very small room and serve a purpose but in a zed 10's at least ;)

Cheers for that Olly. I reckon I could open up the boxes to take 10's. I was thinking of doing this anyway. Have a look at the pic.. Even if I have to make them again having more of a slope down to floor - creating more area for sub to sit in.

I would enlarge them to accept a 10" then fill it with loft insulation or alike which will give them enough air each.

Go for a half decent sub, something like MTX, Kicker, Alpine Type R and get a small monoblock amp to power them. You will get a very good sound, punchy and still drop low enough with the 10's without increasing box size or space required !

Let me know what ya decide and give us some pics when finished

Olly.

If you cant be arsd to take the wheel lining apart then do what I did, run the power cable through a hole in the bulkhead behind the battery, make sure you put some antirust stuff on it after you've drilled.

Then, run the cable through the hole, down past the Air condensor unit to the centre console and then along that, under the carpet to the rear seats. Under them and then to the boot.
