Ok, let's put this one to bed people. Even the guys who made the car don't know the answer to this (well...), so lets put it to the vote...

What are the differences in horse power between the different models of 300ZX?

    • They are all 280bhp, and any quotes of 300 are in PS

    • The Jap and UK are 280, while the yanks go one better with 300

    • Early models are 300, but later ones are 280 due to emissions

    • Manual TTs are 300 while auto TTs are 280 cos of the autobox

Because you don't have to change gear ;) Plus you don't come off boost when the auto is shifting, so it's back on the power harder and faster than a manual (kinda, anyway).

I agree with Aaron here. I had BOVs installed while my car was an automatic, and when changing up they didnt get a chance to dump! (although kind of missed the point - thank goodness for manual conversions!)

O.K so my manual has larger turbos.....what happens then if i put auto turbos on my manual ???? :)

it would and should be a good thing

lol - just taken a look at the poll results so far and (apart from the sensible option - the last one ;) ) it's almost even stevens! No wonder we always argue about it :D

If auto's are quicker on the 1/4 mile than the manual version my car must think its an auto, if you want a quicker Z you need to get your torque figure up at lower rpm as the BHP does not come in to the running untill the motor is pulling high rpm.

In an ideal setup as the torque curve starts to drop off at say 5000rpm the BHP curve would still be climbing steeply up to say 7000rpm before starting to drop get this on a dyno graph and you will have a very quick Z.

A lot of bracket racers are auto for that reason, easier to be consistant, and quicker than shifting a manual (plus with a turbo you can have a really high stall speed, and build big boost before even moving if you hold the brakes and rev it up to just before the stall point).

'course, "proper" dragsters are manuals :D (Well.. not much like a normal manual gearbox, admittedly.. )

Hi mate

It wasn't really a question that I wanted and answer for, but more of a question to provoke a little thought which in turn might put to bed this constantly recuring stupid and irrelevent question.

It depends on driving style, abillity and what you want or how you want to use your Z as to wether the auto or manual would be most meritorious

had my auto converted to manual, so its still got the auto tubs.

i have been told that this set up, manual with auto tubs, will give faster turbo spool up.

dont know if its really any quicker though

but deffo alot more fun! :D

Isn't that in PS and it's actually 225bhp? :x:

Would be the other way round, mate :D

If you have a figure in PS then actual BHP is lower so 225PS is probably 222BHP.....

Richard :smw:

I have something to say............ It's better to burn out than to fade away..... :tt2:

Some Facts :

Autos have Smaller Turbo's compared to Manuals

OK, please help me here i'm a bit confused. I have plans for an auto to manual conversion before the year is out. If the auto turbo's are smaller and designed to suit an auto box, how will there be a smooth marriage to the manual box? I can see some of you have had this done, so are there problems to consider down the line?

It's one big and bloody expensive job, (specially for me cos I'll have to take my Z over to the UK to have it done).

about £1400-£1600 for the kit and the work. ive had the conversion done and not had any problems regarding the standard auto turbos. but then again ive not driven a 'natural' manual so i wouldnt know of any differences.

  • 3 months later...

The Jap and UK are 280, while the yanks go one better with 300????????

No no no every one knows that a US Z is 500bhp in stock form running stock tubs and stock pistons

This was talked about in a previous thread. I was asking if you would have any probs about this because of the difference in cam profile and turbo's but the answer i got was that its so minimal you won't feel any difference. Still makes me wonder though

I got a Manwell and had auto tub's and cam's put in recently - I defo think it's faster and no probs so far

I do note a slight decrease in top speed acceleration, but by then I'm usualy way ahead of anyone that would have noticed :D

and it's so slight I'm not sure if it's actual or just me listening to the talk in here.

My verdict - go for it. You should notice the quicker spool and hence fast acceleration, and probably won't miss the top end.

what about octane 95 ron compared to 101 ron must make a differance i know when i put optimax in my 24v carlton it made a lot of differance. nissan did say they set the uk models up for 95 ron (as was the feul then) wouldn't this result in less bhp

I have the UK series 2 sales brochure which states the Twin turbo with a manual box has 278ps and the auto has 263ps.
