I had em replaced....IIRC there is a built-in (design) feature which allowed a certain amount of slack so the belt didnt get uncomfortable by snagging on your clothes etc... its electronically controlled...pop off the door card and there is a small connector which runs from the seat-belt unit...it controls the slackness if you unclip it i think the belt then operates as a normal retracting belt....shoot me down if i'm wrong someone...:D

I've heard this as well. Legrath told my a few days ago. My seatbelts do all manner of strange things. Drivers one wouldn't retract at all yesterday, it felt like it was jammed. Eventually though, it became unstuck and retracted. Passenger side is worse. Both you have to feed back inside anyway.

Onld car I used to have I cleaned all the belts and sprayed them with back to black, made the one hell of a lot quicker at retracting.

I'm interested in knowning more about disabling the electronics inside the seatbelts. Obviously now, they are rendered pretty useless and detrimental to the recoil of the things, so would be nice to know if anyone's done this mod.

meeeeeeeeeee to...im interested...

It certainly has some effect on this electrical connection thingy as when i plug it in then unplug it,it then recoils properly...so the connection in the belt socket must have something to do with it..

hhhmmmm

It does and then doesn't have that effect on mine. I guess the whole system is beginning to die somewhat. It'll fail its MOT for sure if it doesn't recoil.

I was going to vote, but I already have! must have been in my purple hazy days of the sixties.

My passenger one was fine and now it wont recoil it Pi**es me off big time.

Have been offerd one for the right money been to bone idle to get it sent !

Heres a tip not really ideal as belt is for safety but it will get it through the mot . If your belts gone bobbly and looks slightly frayed Get a lighter and run the flame up the affected area. It burns off the bobbly frayed bits and and looks like a good belt !! If you have a poor Retraction on the belt

Plug ALL the belts in so depending on the Inspector he can see there all good and locking in etc. :D Its not guaranteed but may help if the inspector does not check every single detail on all you belts :hyper: :hyper:

if your right il buy you a beer

My drivers belt didnt retract when i had the standard seat now i have a recaro seat with a bride subframe it does the same not retract and the wire and plug from the buckle is hanging under the sub frame because theres nowhere to plug it in now .It proves these electronic pre-tensoiner seat belt things are rubbish. Also 180sx s13s imports have these as well but uk s13 200sx dont.

Can you not talk about your sack please

Anyway....

Does this actually work, i trip over my belt as a fall out of the car.

Haha that reminds me of when i first bought my Zed back in 03 i refused to drive it being 19 at the time i dreaded the thought of driving a 300hp car home 100 odd mile for the first time. So i made my dad drive it well it wasn't hard to make him lol. We pulled up at a petrol station i jumped out of my bimmer all excited as you do pulled the dool open on the Zed while puppa smurf still had the belt on and he kinda fell out of the door in front of loads of people as the belt being fit to the door pulled him out, he didn't find it as funny as i did though. haha he got revenge by leaving me on the way back "daddy... where are you?? i'm lost"

All and Sundry....

I no longer have saggy belts!

Don't know if your problems on a series one are caused by the same two issues ... but here is how I fixed mine:

Remove door trim.

On the side of the belt collector nearest the edge of the door remove the cover. You will see a wheel with a smaller saw toothed version behind.

Pull the belt out to its full extent noting which way the wheel turns.

manually turn the wheel untill it locks (less than one rev.)

release the belt by half an inch to release the lock then manually turn the wheel until it locks again (repeat a dozen or so times).

Then release the belt and it should return at an acceptable speed.

Put the colector and door back together (with the exception of the door mount for the seat belt).

Grease all washers with silicon lubricant or similar - not too much - you don't want the vibration from that fat boy exhaust causing the bolt to come loose!

Make sure you have a plastic washer on each side before you re-attach.

Now bolt in the door mount making sure you have rotational play on the harness.

In short - the return spring was loose on mine and even when tightened the friction from the top of door mount feeder was too great to allow the belt to slide through.

The runner for the window is foobarred, but I have adjusted that now so it doesn't pop out when I close the boot!!!
