I need to look to replace my clutch in the medium term - doesn't feel right, etc....

I would like your opinions on a good replacement clutch. My TT is stock, but I would like to work towards a Stage 3 spec (I am enjoying the discussions on AirFilters & Exhausts).

The Nissan parts, I believe are around £300, so I thought I would look at the possibility of a heavier duty clutch.

I have been viewing the TurboImports.com site and their ACT Street Clutch. Also they have an RPS Turbo clutch (perhaps APEXVR4.com does this cheaper, but don't know if they will send to UK).

I guess a 'paddle clutch' (Silvia) would be OTT, and a harsher feel, for my application.

Will be pleased to see your advise and wisdom. A great site.

Thanks, Geoff

I have been using a Centreforce Dual Friction which is rated to about 450-500 BHP I think? See www.centreforce.com I bought mine from a web site in California and the pricing and shipping still made it worth while. Fitting price is about £150-£175 from most places experienced in the 300.

I will try and find the link to the site where I bought it from.

ACT, RPS and Cyclone (Clutch Masters I think) are some of the popular ones in the states.

I have the Cyclone 3.5, although I'm probably going to need the Cyclone full metal version due to the power I'm running now. 8)

Don't go for the 6 puck (I assume this is the paddle), as it's OTT for your mods and not as drivable. (And is OTT for my mods too)

Avoid Centerforce dual friction, most people have it start to slip early and doesn't appear to handle increased power too well. (I had one, it's naff)

turboimports.com works well for the UK customers, don't know about apexvr4.com...

Grant, your post wasn't there when I started wrighting mine... 8(

For advice on the centerforce do a search on www.twinturbo.net and read the mix responces yourself and the other makes.

Jez, I did a bit of research before I got mine and the Centreforce seemed to have good feedback. I am Stage 3 and have no problems with slipping etc. The weight is nice and the drive feel is the same as the Nissan original.

Anyway..... http://www.performanceintl.com/default.htm

is where i bought mine from listed at $424 dollars and don't forget the throw out bearing.

I have the RPS turbo clutch and it seems to handle anything I throw at it at the moment being anywhere up to 450hp.

I've heard the ACT is also good but probably slightly heavier on the pedal.

Also, Jez has the cyclone 3.5 which is good but his makes a nice burning smell after treating it to a recipe of 5500rpm launches and 1.87bar boost ;-)

I got the ACT street clutch from Turbo Imports for around $400 for thew whole kit.

As Steve said, it is a bit heavy on the pedal, but you get used to it (my left calf muscle never looked so good lol).

Incidentally, I got mine fitted by my local Nissan dealer for about £150.

Strange, the clutch burning smell hasn't happened since that test drive round your house, nor has the fuel smell. Hopefully I was burning off all the engine cleaner, fuel, carb cleaner, WD40 type mixture from the Plenium.

Anyhow, we will see, maybe the it depends which way the wind blows.

I was cleaning my engine AGAIN today, it takes foreever, and I'm no-where near done. I think I must have breathed most of the WD40 into my lungs. 8)

Thanks to all for your help, knowledge and advice.

I have been in contact with Tim at Turbo Imports, and for your information he highly recommends the ACT Street Clutch Kit - it includes bearings, pressure plate, disk and alignment tool.

Before talking to him I think I was swaying towards the RPS Clutch. Fyi, he has a large number of 300 ZX TT customers, and all who have fitted the ACT report back that it is a good reliable clutch. Recently he has had to return a couple of RPS clutches! He considers all 'performance clutches' to be a little firmer than standard, but I didn't get to the bottom of whether he thought one firmer than another.

My clutch should take a few days to be delivered to Austin, and then it will be despatched via UPS. The Clutch Kit is $389.95, and (to be confirmed) UPS delivery around the $70/$80 mark. I will let you know when it arrives and the total cost (including UK duty, etc...), for those interested.

Thanks again, Geoff

Good choice Geoff, when its fitted it'll feel very stiff at first, but it will get easier the more times its depressed.

Be prepared for a little 'chatter' as well, this will go after a couple of hundred miles.

Most of all, take it easy for the first 800-1000 miles. I wouldn't start boosting (if you have a TT!) until you've done at least 500 miles, just give it a chance to break it in properly. Try lots of stop-go driving with frequent and very smooth gearchanges, definatley no hard launches!

I know its really tempting to boot it, (I reached stage 3 a week before getting it done, I was dying to feel 12-13 psi) but you'll only knacker it!

I thought this would come through quickly, but I have had to chase weekly (delivery & despatch delays through trade show attendance, UPS problems, Thanksgiving, etc....being given as excuses). It is a good job it was not urgent.

However it looks as though things may be moving as I see my credit card has been debited on 28Nov by £368. I don't think the delay has done me any favours as the USD rate has moved and noted as 1.38!! Hopefully I will get details from TurboImports confirming despatch and US costs. Will post again once more details known, for those interested.

No information from TurboImports yet, but the Clutch Kit was delivered by UPS today. UPS collected £62.19 to cover taxes (£43.91), Duties (£8.28) and Brokerage Surcharge (£10.00).

So the total is £368.43 + £62.19 = £448.62.

.......Now for the fitting.

Thanks, Geoff
