have only just noticed that my rear lights on the right hand side dont come on when asked to. bugger. changed the filaments - no joy. swapped wiring looms with left hand side and they work fine in the LHS position? right, time for multimeter....

12volts to both left and right light assy's but whatever loom goes in the RHS wont illuminate the filaments? ok

next twist...

pushing brake pedal illuminates 'LIGHTS' on dash. oh dear, that cant be right

pushing brake pedal also illuminates standard rear lights on RHS,brake lights on RHS, brake lights on LHS and brake light on spoiler

so basically the standard rear lights on the RHS only come on when braking and then the brake lights come on with them obviously. (each bulb has two filaments inside, one for standard lights ON, another illuminates when braking).

what i need to know is where and how someone has managed to wire up the RHS rear lights to the brake pedal, if that is whats wrong, and how i'm going to wire them back up to the lights switch??

help! :(

Sounds like a bad earth, you may have a good + supply but a poor - , check and clean any dirty connections , also try some different bulbs ,you could have a bad bulb , i,m no leccy expert but its were i,d start HTH ;)

You might want to follow the wiring down the right handside panal, you will then find a little black box which is about the size of a penguin bar :D disconnect that and clean the connections, mine had this prob for about 4 weeks and everyone said earth :( it wasnt it was the black relay box full of water.

Hope this helps fella.

thanks for the help guys, its good to know there's people out there that have gone through the same thing!

boldy i'm positive its not the bulbs as they work in the LHS position. someone at work said bad eatrh too so i'll check connections.

chrisp, i did have a fog conversion done but guess what? the rear fog switch does naff all when operated with the other lights on. i.e nothing 'extra' lights up when viewed from the rear and switch turned on? uh oh.

birks & sgt C, i found the relay box your talking about and assumed it was part of the UK rear fog conversion work, as my housemates j-spec zed hasn't had this work done and doesn't have the relay & extra wiring. actually there are two small black boxes on mine now i think about it, one relay (can here it clicking when operating switch in dash), and also what looks like a connector box? both stuck together. and both have two blue wires, a red wire and a black earth each.

i thought this had to be the problem but the trouble is when i completely removed the relay boxes and extra wiring, basically de modding it back to jap spec, the problem remained...

the standard rear lights on the RHS only come on when braking and then obviously the brake lights come on with them. plus the dash 'LIGHTS' still illuminates when braking even with the cars lights turned off. def not right.

...i reckon someone has managed to wire the rear RHS lights to the brake pedal instead of the light switch but i have no idea where to begin looking or fixing? any more ideas lads cos i'm 80% sure its not the relay/rear fog conversion wiring at the back, or a bad earth. having said that, whoever did the work might have messed up the wiring at the front...

might explain why the rear fog switch doesn't put any added lighting on.

It is one of the Black boxes fella , mine was the same and took me weeks to find it....:(

Just because the relay can be heard to be clicking it does not mean that the contacts are making well as this would drive power to both right and left hand sides seperately most probably through different sets of contacts on the relay , as Sgt C says this is most definatley where the problem is clean the contacts and try again

good luck mate

Steve

black box - my j-spec has one and it plays's up now and again and the lights warning lights up on the dashboard - clean the contacts and assuming the internals are ok, you should have a cured problem.
