Mods for UK Spec 91 TT

Hi!

I've just bought a 91 UK Spec TT and it's fantastic!!

Only thing is, now I want to fit it with an ECU upgrade in order to pave the way for increasing boost, etc. in the future.

With my car being a UK spec model, are there any major differences I should be aware of or can I just drop a JWT ECU in there?

Also what's this 'mines' ECU I keep hearing about?

Thanks in advance!

John

You need to get the ECU socketed John which is why you normally have to send your ECU to JWT in the US wink.gif

Mines = Satan

Ask Warren, he's the expert on the Conan the Engine Destroyer of ECUs...ROFL biggrin.gif

It's a serious bit of kit that's mapped to run on seriuos octane fuelling. It prefers 100+ octane, and like a Tamagotchi, if you don't feed it the right food it expires with spectacular consequences e.g. yer engine goes West! biggrin.gif

Stear clear if I were you, JWT is the safest but...

Yoda: "Therrre issss a-cough-anotthhhheerrrrr"

John when you order a JWT (the best) from someone like Cos at Ultimate Zed in the states he will ask you the details of your Zed. It's important that he knows the domestic market it was intented for (UK or Jap Import) and if it is an Auto or a Manual. (No debate please ;-)))))

See Dave Marley's post as it looks like that's 2 of you that want one now!

Jap Spec TT Auto with a JWT!

AndyP may have convinced me to go with the SE chip. His dyno charts with it installed are pretty impressive compared to the JWT.

Hence my Yoda bit! wink.gif

Timmy, is your SE chip just an off the shelf job, or did you have it tuned on your car?

If it's off the shelf, it looks very impressive indeed.

To the best of our knowledge it's off the shelf. I borrowed it to run in my car for the dyno day. I was so impressed that I'll be heading to SE to get one of my own. MAC 1 also has one, as does Hairsy's old car - whereever that went.

As Andy said plus Pete will do individual setups aswell. I think Iain(MAC1) had his setup on a dyno and road trials as did Dave Hairs.

Andy put JWT in mine and the car felt sluggish after having the SE chip in. So the SE chip went back in...nice to have both though...LOL! biggrin.gif

Thanks for all the info guys, very helpful. :-)

I think my best bet will be to get the JWT.

Cheers,

John

Dave,

Bear in mind that my car is relatively unrestricted in that I have a Mongoose exhaust, no cats and an SE intake, so maybe a good chip has more opportunities for make a difference. However, a decent exhaust and intake is what JWT claim will give 396bhp at the flywheel using their chip (on a manual). I don't know what sort of asthmatic pit ponies they measure, but it seems that European stallions are made of stronger stuff. Mine was only making about 266bhp at the wheels with the JWT chip. Losses in the drive train had better be nothing like 100bhp. Both the chips also seem to run a bit rich (it's safer that way) so I reckon that with setting this up properly on a dyno you could get a bit more power. Hairsy's was 432bhp, but I think that must have been corrected for a flywheel figure.

I've got a mongoose exhaust too, soon (hopefully) to be decatted when Johnny comes up with the goods. I've also got a JWT intake and an underdrive pulley.

I wonder if JWT supply a more conservative program for UK cars or maybe just for Japanese cars. That might explain the lower than expected hp figure.

Yes I can confirm that my car has got the SE chip,I am very pleased with it and would not change it for anything.

so what power did you make them ian?

Timmy you always do one hello of a job telling the story how you see fit to make it work for you ?

At the end of the day ECU

A: Choose companies that have been doing it for years and race cars for a living and have big reputations for reliablitly (JWT)

B: some half hearted backyard dealer that has gone insolevent twice in one year changed name, has blown more 300s up then have moved through there shop?

Ill never forget watching pete tune that ecu on crazzie eddies car on the open day.

"im not sure what this bit of coding does but im ure well find out" ???????

very reasuring.

your choice but i would go safly.

Ha Ha

Good old Warren

Think I will just sit back and watch this thread explode into another war LOL

Paul

Warren, we all know your thoughts on SE,but I think Pete will be Pissed about your claim he has gone insolvent twice and Craig (the moderator of this web site) could get sued.

Whatever your opinions are are fine, and thats the great thing about this forum, but it's best to stick to the facts on certain things.

Anyway, on a lighter note, considering I have not suffered any engine failures etc :P SE must be making a reasonable job of looking after my car. 357BHP without a chip or any engine mods ain't bad.

Grant

News of insolvency is news to me but Warren didn't name names. I would like to be fair and let everyone who doesn't already know that Pete has been doing tuning for many many years. He has built World Rally Car engines and worked in many classes of single seater in the US and Europe up to Formula 3000.

For the benefit of new people, my thoughts on SE are documented elsewhere - do a search on 'SE' and on 'Silvia Engineering'.

D

i was not even on about them i was trying to make a point?

hmmm now you have me thinking.

So then in theory MINES Could take timmy to court based on what he just said above,

That was my point, dotn open your mouth if you dont knwo the facts.

Simple really isint it.

Funny how everyone goes on the defence.

Beside no ecu 1 bar of boost and 257 bhp

SE ecu and 1 bar of boost 315 bhp? Does anyone see a pattern here?
