Hi chaps,

I'm currently trying to decide what car to use for my next project. I know little about 300zx's but I am familiar with tuning turbo cars.

Could you tell me;

1) What the hp limit of the standard fuel system is. From the FAQ's it sounds like 300's have quite small injectors which run out around the same point as the stock turbos 16-17psi.

2) If going beyond 16-17psi and changing injectors etc, which forms of engine management do you opt for. Greddy emanage, Power FC?

3) What is the hp capacity of the standard airflow meter?

4) How hard is it to work on a 300zx? E.g. in doing say a turbo change or fitting a downpipe etc? Are there any really horrible jobs to do like timing belts etc?

Many thanks!

Steve

1. we have cars running stock tubs & injectors around the 430bhp (crank) mark

2. 555cc (or bigger) injectors can be fitted with a different chip.

3. around 550bhp IIRC

4. a bit tight!! tub changes really means engine out!! some have done it in situ but its not easy!

HTH :)

Wow .. that was quick :D

For the cars running around 430hp, whats the typical amount of mods required?

Exhaust, intake, downpipe and then just boost increase?

Its impossible to tell what a car has had done to it with only knowing the power. Are we talking bhp at the wheel or crank?

The mods you list will give you about 360-380 at the fly I would say.

To get the 430ish, that you would need higherboost of 17-18psi of boost maybe more.

If you are running that boost, you will need, uprated turbos, larger injectors, better intercoolers/cooler, and probably lightened pulley and flywheel and probably new forged pistons

If you want to modify the engine, you are better off taking the engine out and doing it all at once. To change the turbos is an engine out job anyway. You can do it with the engine in from under the car, but its easier and probably quicker to take the engine out.

Changing downpipes is, really like any other car's downpipes, just that there are 2 of them being a V6.

Doing the timing belt is not a pleasent job, but there are many detailed instructions on the net helping you to do such things making the whole experience a lot easier.

There are good sources of information in the links section which can be accessed using the button at the top of the screen.

I got to 340 rwhp, about 420 crank.

power mods were Intake,exhaust,de-cat,ECU,14.5psi of boost with boost controller, Underdrive pulley, lightened flywheel. Also had dual intake, AFC and carbon prop though they were not necessary for that power level.

You will also need supporting mods, cooling (water & oil), suspension & bushes, brakes, clutch (stock one will melt as soon as the boost goes up)

Thanks for the info guys. Giving plenty of food for thought.

It looks a right nightmare swapping turbos over lol!

Did you ever 1/4 mile your car jaffa with 340rwhp?

Thanks

yup, best was around 13.3 on street tires

Thats a pretty good time for a car as heavy as a Z!

How do 300zx's respond to nitrous? Are they quite happy on it :D
