I've bought a S14 from Japan which should arrive in 2 months time. It has a n/a motor in it which is lsightly underpowered for my liking. I'm toying with the idea of doing an engine swap, but something different. So how anout a VG30DETT engine in a stripped lightweight drift S14? sounds like fun to me.

Reason is surely these can be picked up cheap and they should have tons of grunt without the need for modding, plus i'm really after a big V6 sound like from the 350z. Do they sound like that at all?

Anyway, does anyone know of anyone who has attempted this? obviously i'd need to fabricate some new mounts, but i'm wondering

a) is the engine gonna be too heavy for a drift car/?

b) i've heard they aren't very good for tuning?

c) what's the n/a motor like?

thanks for any help guys!

Hi there and welcome to the forum! I think your best bet for information is to check out http://www.hybridz.org. Myself and a good mate are swapping our VG30DETT engines for VH45DE's and that forum was full of good advice/contacts. For example, I just did a quick search and came up with this which you may be interested in: http://forums.hybridz.org/showthread.php?t=88159

The trouble with the VG30 is when tuning it you hit something of a glass ceiling. After you've done the basics: induction, exhaust, re-mapped chip, boost controller (I'm excluding the essential braking and suspension upgrades that should go hand in hand) you start hitting major £££££'s when it comes to coolers, injectors, uprated turbo's etc. And it does have something of a reutation for being a little temperamental. Though if modifications are executed correctly and with care, you might have years of trouble free motoring!

P.S. Single exit is the only way to go for that great sound!

a> in a "stripped" S14: yes

b> no, the lack of space around the engine (in a Zed) and the fact that you need 2 of everything is the main problem/cause..you'd probably have even less space in a S14 (if the VG even fits it at all)

c> very good, strong and reliable engine.

You'd better get an inline 6 for your project, like the RB25DET (or RB26DETT with RB25 gearbox.)

right ok. thanks for the advice. i had a feeling it's a no go. cheers for the link friday, will check it out for sure. ;)

hmm any ideas on the VG30DET? will that be smaller due to having the one turbo?

Wouldnt the handling of the S14 go to hell considering how much more heavier the VG30 is! It's like what some people ove in the US are doing to their Civics and replacing them with a H22 Engine. Pretty good for straight line, but turning conners? Hell no.

Personally the RB25 or even a RB26 is a better idea.

yeah, i wasn't aware the engines were so heavy. i thought it would be a bit different but theres too many downsides and immposibilites, it's not worth it, it seems. ta for the advice.

Go for it! Put a zed TT engine in it and be a bit different! It would be a awesome project. As for the weight differance, a few extra kilograms want make that much differance!
