Help?? What Have I Done Wrong???

I thought i'd make the most of yesterday by fitting my american indiglo dials to my imported n/a Z. :headvswal

I've followed closely the help guides which have been previously posted but ahhh well here goes..........

I've changed the R10 resistor on the back of the speedo and soldered in a 24K one (quite neatly if i do say so myself) and stuck the new dials over the face of the old ones without removing the needles.

On the test drive yesterday all dials worked properly except for the speedometer which now doesnt move at all......... Oh yes and the power steering doesnt work !!!!

Are the two connected??????????

Any ideas please guys????????

Nismo, the two are connected! the speeo takes its signal from the sped sensor in the gear box and then it is distributed to the cruise control, the gear box ecu ( if auto) the engine ecu and the speed sensative power steering ( including hicas)

It would appear you have lost the signal at the speedo head, could be a mistake on the soldering ( shorting or wrong place) or maybe the speedo head itself has decided at the moment to call it a day ( they do that sometimes) or a speed sensor / cable fault.

If you have a digital volt meter the following method is the easiest and quickest way to track the fault down.

1) Using two trolley jacks raise the rear whels 3 to 4 inches off the floor and chock the front wheels. ( TAKE SPECIAL CARE WITH ROTATING WHEELS ON JACKS)

2) Release the dash cluster again but leave connected, move the cluster in to a position so that you can access the rear of the unit ( bit fiddly)

3) Take your meter and set it to AC voltage ( MUST BE AC VOLTAGE)

4) Connect one of the leads to a good earth point.

5) Now with the engine running, handbrake off select a gear or drive if an auto.

6) The other meter lead can now be touched against the pins on the rear of the speedo to takE readings and trace the fault ( explained below)

Viewing the cluster from the rear, immediately behind the speedo head there are 4 screws in a North, South, East, West arrangement, the East screw is the input from the gearbox speed sensor, you are looking for 1 to 3 + volts AC dependant upon wheel/ gearbox speed, if you have a correct value here but the speedo is NOT working then the speedo head / resistor mod is faulty if however there is NO signal then the gearbox sender or cabling is faulty.

A simple continuity test from the same point to the speed sensor pilug under the car will confirm if it is the cable fault or the sender.

Hope that helps

I do have photo`s to aid with this but cannot post them here, if required mail me and will send them to you. jeff@zedworld.co.uk

PS. If you do not have the meters or feel uneasy doing this test then I suggest replacing the resister to the previous staet and try it again..just as fault illiminator.

Cheers Jeff mate, have tried it all again and it works!!!! :hyper:

Nice looking NA mate, not sure about the wing but the rest is sweet...
