Hi,

I am going to change the dipped beam bulbs for some of Halfords brighter, cheaper ones. (with the relevent alterations)

I also want to adjust the angle of the lights, as they appear to be too low at the moment. How do I go about it?

Open the hood (like duuuh ;) ) and look behind the headlight. There's somethink looking like a thin bolt going into the back of the headlights. Think it's a 10 mm, just turn it and u'll see which was is what.

Hi Jez

I just picked up my Z from Scotland and on

the drive back to London (which was fun!!)

noticed that the headlights are well poor.

you mentioned the relevent alterations.

what are they?? as i need to go down the same road.

also how do you get the gear knob away as i can't see any kinda of grub screw etc.

Hi,

As my car is a Japanese Import, I have the Jap spec. 2 prong bulbs...the Halfords bulbs are much cheaper, but only have one spade connector. You therefore have to solder another lead and spade connector onto the body of the bulb, for it to work.(see an earlier post from Simon)

I have just done mine and am waiting to test them out..hopefully they will be brighter! The stock bulbs are very yellow and at night I couldn't see where I was going at night.

I've just adjusted the headlights as they seemed to be pointing down into the pods,on dipped beam.

I have tried, briefly to remove my gearknob and swap it with an alloy one from a previous car,but without success!..it just seems to spin round...any ideas would be appreciated.

S#*T!...all that messing with the headlights has flattened my battery!

i don't need to worry about alterations as my car is uk spec, but i still have the problem with not being able to see much at night!!

Also had the same thing with the gear stick

i get the feeling there is a dead easy way to remove it but i havn't found it yet.

I also followed Simon's procedure the other weekend. The procedure is over in the "Tech Sec" - left side of the screen - as well as in earlier posts. My thanks to Simon.

I went to Halfords and went for the box marked "NEW" - 453B High Performance Brilliance Headlight bulb: Xenon gas technology; 30% brighter; £8-99 each. They are much better. The one thing that worried me is that I also bought from Halfords the 16amp blue wire, and this is very robust. My fear is that if the wire is knocked there is not enough flex, and the soldered joint will prove brittle. It hasn't yet, but perhaps there is a more forgiving wire?

Although much better the dipped lights are still not bright enough. Looking at the Relays under the bonnet, there is one marked 'H/Lamp Dim', and guess what, if you look at Bob's CD-ROM there are a host of 'Dim Dip' circuits with a unit somewhere just behind one of the front wheels.

Is this the source of our main problem (I remember a number of UK cars in the 80's were built to a MoTransport dimmer dip regulation, later revoked by the EU, I think)? Or is this nothing more than stopping an overload when using the headlight flash, or somesuch..?

Any electrical wizards? From the earlier posts it looks to be a problem with both Import and UK spec cars?

Geoff

It's worth trying to adjust the headlight height, as mine were shining down partially into the headlamp pods.

With them adjusted, and using the "30% brighter" bulbs, the difference is definitely noticeable.

I also thought about converting the front fog lights to driving lights(as seen on another forum)
