Same old story peeps...Zed wont start

Have trawled through 500 threads this morning since 6am and have loadsa ideas to try thanks to the excellent database.

Would appreciate any further ideas or extra tips if you can think of any please.

PROBLEM:

last used Zed on friday afternoon and has been running superbly for 4 months since ive had it.

Started it sunday afternoon (was gona goto town init but used wifes car instead...wont go into that now..space issues..lol)

Anyhow..it started and i then switched it off within a minute.

Try to start it this morning at 5:30 and it was a no go.

INFO:

series 1 PTU  :xxx:

Used to start within 1 secound

Full Battery power.

Starter cranks engine but doesnt even hint at starting.

Fuel pump primes as normal.

It has been raining most of the night but have never had any leaks in engine bay and it was bone dry when i lifted the bonnet.

I have never experinced any problems with the MAF in the rain due to the Apexi fitted and was last used in the dry anyway so no chance of the water getting in.so am doubting this fault.

Have wiggled all connectors but it is lashing it down this morning so am unable to remove and clean connectors at the mo through as i dont want water getting in every where and making it worse.

I am waiting till my misses wakes up to tell me if she can smell fuel or not when i crank the car.

My left o2 sensor is not very good but has been cack for a while now and never had any probs.

AREAS TO CHECK:-

#1)Connections corroded

#2)ecu error codes

#3)coil packs

#4)MAF

#5)PTU series 1=code 21, i.e. a PTU failure

#6)Spark plugs or any spark

#7)CAS connector (crank angle sensor) (code11) If the CAS was faulty the ECU would keep cutting the fuel pump when it wasn't getting a signal.

= remove the coilpack connectors and check for water down there.fault readings and if it's come up with crank sensor=the connection on the CAS

#8)Conzult

#Question 1)Will my ConZult tell me if the PTU is fooked?

Apparently a code 21 is the result but is this for definate or is it just saying there is no connection or a electrical fault somewhere?

#Question2)Will the ConZult tell me anything at all if the car wont start?

From all i have read this problem seems as if it is either Dodgy connections or a fooked PTU the later being the most likely as what connectors have been apart were spotlesly clean.

obviously im gonna check for sparks and fuel first

As soon as it stops lashing it down im off outside for the day tinkering and fiddling

(with the car...come on chaps  not like that)

Any suggestions or other tips much appreciated as im feeling sorry for myself

ThankZ

Are you getting the ignition lights come on as normal?

Mornin mate

yer...certainly am...all as the norm....just wont fire...not even a pip

Morning Steve,

The only thing I can suggest is to check that you are getting fuel and you are getting spark.

If you are, then take it from there mate.

Have you sprayed all connectors with water dispersant?

Not yet bud....Its only just finished lashing it down outside so im off in a min to do all the connectors and a ConZult check.

Shall i use wd40 on the contacts even if there already clean or is there a better stuff to use?

Mornin :wack:

Thats first in line todo bud...but me missus wernt up at 530 this mornin so ive had to wait till she rises to have a smell whilst i crank it over.

I have new plugs to fit thanks to Chunk but will plug a spare in first n see if its kicking anything out.

Then its ConZult time and connector cleaning...arce

OK....have just done a ConZult test and im getting these results:-

CODE 33: HEATED OXYGEN SENSOR CIRCUIT - LEFT (16 STARTS AGO)

CODE 34: KNOCK SENSOR CIRCUIT (1 STARTS AGO)

So neither of these is my problem as it happend less than 16 starts ago but more than 1 start ago.

plus the knock/det sensor wont stop the Zed from running.

and the o2 sensor has always been a bit iffy but would only overfuel and not stop the Z from running completely.

HHmmmmm...

Does this mean its not ptu either as surely i would of had a code for it???

just about to check for spark and fuel....

TBC....

where about in herts are you mate?

Hi ...

Im in Stevenage :D

I have just checked for sparks and fuel and have a nice petrol smell at the rear..not to much but enough.

I also have sparks...i have only tested no:1 but am about to test the rest.

i would of thought it unlikely that it would be spark plugs as the chances of all of them dieing instantly would be fairly rare.so i should at least get a sign of a ignition but nowt :headvswal

very stuck now.

I have wiggled CAS and PTU connectors whilst trying to start but no luck.

will have to take them off now and clean but the coil connectors are spotless so i doubt its corroded terminal problems.

Any help please peeps

I have now tested the front four coil packs and Im getting sparks on them.

The rear two i havnt tested as you have to remove alot of stuff just to get them out :smash:

I would think that at least four sparking coils would be enough to get even a hint of a start of fire?

What the feck is it?

HHmmmmmm

connector of and cclean time me thinks

The fact that im getting a spark at all does that rule out a dodgy PTU???

I had sparks but to be honest they wernt all that big..nice blue electric colour but nothing spectaculer....not that frequent either...but then as its not running it wouldnt be that fast i supose?

Ive had one sort of start and it spluttered and sounded like runnin on one cylinder then died(lasted bout 3 secounds) :hurl:

Hello mate.

Had the same sort of problem on a previous motor. Dont know if the same thing could happen on a zed but if you are getting spark and fuel, maybe the timing is out, the chain/belt could have slipped when you fired her up the last time.

No expert in this field but maybe worth a try.

Only time I've ever had a non starter was when the ECU connector was slightly lose. Just pushed the blue connector in firmly and tightened the securing bolt slightly. May be worth a quick check just to make sure...

The timing mechanism is done up tight so not sure if or how it would of moved.

How would i check the timing without starting car starting ?

Ta

It has to be thr PTU mate it happend to me twice first time i had the same problem as you changed the PTU and it was ok, when i opened the bad PTU up only one of the tiny wires had come away but that one wire caused the car not to start at all.

Second time i was only firing on 5 cylinders but it did start so i guess depending what cylinder has gone will give you different symptoms,i wont hope you get it going i know you will good luck.
