what does the little switch on the lever do?

 

(don't know if it's coinsidance but pressed it this evening and got my power back on kick down!)

    There are two little switches on the lever. One is for overdrive and the other is the safety lock that allows you to take it out of park without the brake pedal depressed.

    one in question is the vertical long thin thing attached to the side of the lever, red dot on top - just pushes down or pushes down (on/off type thing)...

    Thats the manual release switch - lets you take it out of Park with the engine off and your foot off the brake..
