My car has door mounted seatbelts and ive heard that there is a retraction device of some sort when you switch off the ignition, anyone got any info on this, or know where i can find out more A couple of times now ive shut the door and the seatbelt hasnt retracted either by the above method or on the usual springs, and its only a matter of time before i catch my paintwork with the buckle

ye i know what you mean. there is a white plastic cover on the seatbelt roller, with 2 wires going in it. i wanted to take the cover off to see how it worked. im sure it must just be a wee solenoid with a brake on it that rests on the drum of the seatbelt and maybe its fallen off and catches all the time. didnt fancy having to roll up the spring again if it all flew out so i left it. i did try squirting silicone spray into the bushes of the drum but i dont think it helped it much.

i think most of the seatbelts on the 300 have got lazy springs now. it annoys the hell out of me but its not really something i want to mess about with incase it stops locking when it has to!

seems a pointless system anyway, cant think why they went to that bother to make it retract..

i`ve got the same problem, have to feed the belt in sometimes before i open the door otherwise it just hangs down, i noticed a wire going into the roller when i took the door panel off but there was`nt one on the pasenger side !, are they supposed to retract electrically?...or is the wire something to do with a sensor?...

The seatbelts work mechanically. If they do not roll up after been taken off then you probably have to replace them as they are difficult to repair in the long term. It is an easy job to do and can be purchased 2/h. There is nothing electical about them, the two wires go to the warning light in the dashboard, at least they do in mine.

The Wires for the Dashboard warning light come from the the unit that you plug the seatbelt into. There are seperate wires that run into the Roller unit, these are for retraction/tightening device in the seatbelt, not all Zed's have them it would seem.

Some people have found that a clip inside the roller unit become dislodged causing them to not retract properly and the other cause is that the spring weakens over time, but a pair of replacement units can be sourced quite cheaply from the breakers on this forum.
