I ordered an item from Singapore for which I paid £26.99 plus £20.00 shipping. It was delivered ok but I have since received an invoice from the shippers (TNT) asking for an additional £29.47 - £2.48 more than the fooking goods are worth!!

I have tried to call them to discuss, but you get put in an endless queue and can't speak to anyone :(

Could this be correct? The goods value was marked on the paperwork as Singapore $60 (about £20).

I know that this topic has been done to death in the past, but wondered if anyone in the know had any suggestions...

did they give you a break down?

they may have charged a handling fee on top of the tax

As far as I can make out...

£14.78 = VAT

£12.50 = "Deferment Proc Fee"

£2.19 = VAT on the Fee

£29.47 Total to pay

I've checked the rules, and if something is worth £18 or under, it's exempt! The exact value based on that day's Sing $ exchange rate was £19.04

I've had the same with Royal Mail, but it seems different when it's a Courier company...

"Deferment Proc Fee" I just checked with our shipping bod and a "Deferment Guarantee" is an account which an importing company (eg TNT) has with the Customs in order that they can pay the VAT they collect on imported goods. Importers generally charge for the use of their account - either flat rate or % with min charge. That seems to be what they hit you with.

The company I work for, import CV boots from a couple of countries, we had a new supplier in India who started charging us import duty, when this was questioned with the correct authorities customs and ex (Ithink) we were told it was because the commodity code was wrong, this was changed and we now receive the items without import tax.

I will find out the code, and get a better understanding of when you can use it etc, it may just be a case of advising your future supplier the code whenever you purchase from abroad.

Mmmm.. I understand the £12.50 fee, but VAT of £14.78 suggests goods, shipping and charges of £84 or thereabouts.. It doesn't add up!

I've looked at Mike's faq regarding this as well but still stumped. Think I might send them a fax (or am I wasting my time, when I could be earning? )

Unfortunately the vast majority of courier firms now pay your fees for you and have the nerve to charge you a fee for doing so

If for some reason you don't pay it you end up with a reminder and then a solicitors letter ( more cash) and they have been known to hold onto goods once they check their database of unpaid fees from customers.

It is when the invoice arrives about 2 months after the goods that really pisses you off cos you think ah great got away with it but sadly :nono:

The perils of importing :hurl:

Mmm - have sent 'em a snotty fax asking them to justify the charges. Sure I won't get any comeback, but I feel a little better!

Going to pop over to Arizona to collect my new intercoolers in July

You have to pay:

VAT on the (Invoiced Cost Of Goods + Cost Of Shipping)

+

Duty (which is worked out as a % of the invoiced value of the goods depending on the Commodity Code)

+

VAT on the Duty

+

Costs (for using their deferment account, plus the VAT on the charge)

It all adds up. HMC&E are money-grabbing b@stards :(
