about an hour ago i got an undelivered message sent back to me (which i didnt send) from spam.police@africaonline. someone or something has attempted to send a virus to an email address from MY account! (although the name was fred@.... instead of dave@....)

20 mins later two more have come through. different attempted recipients but same sort of thing - an email being sent from my domain which contains a virus. anybody know what i can do?!?!?!??!

as an experiment ive just sent an email to charlie@(my domain name) and ive just received it as if i'd sent it to myself (as in dave@my domain name). surely this shouldnt work should it????

Dave, this typically means that someone who has you in their address book has contracted a virus which is sending out messages containing itself. I've had this a couple of times, not really much you can do but wait it out :( The viruses frequently change the sender name before the @domain.

As far as your domain receiving messages from anyone@yourdomain, you should be able to block messages which are not sent to your specific mailbox. Take a look at your ISP mail control panel and you should be able to redirect all incorrectly addressed messages to your ISPs spam box or simply reject them...

If the non delivery report that you got back is indeed genuine its probably somebody who has emailed you before or has recieved an email from you who has got the virus, there are a few email borne nasties that will "spoof" the sender address of the email..

dont worry too much about it, and if there are any links in the NDR you have recieved dont click on them! just to be on the safe side.

ALso, you'll find, regarding receiving emails when you own your own domain name, that this type of addressing will work.....

ANYTHINGHERE@ yourdomain name.co.uk

Cos you probably have email forwarding setup with the domain holding place

I sometimes use SPAM@mydomainname or similar, when registering on certain websites that I will never want mail from, then I can have a rule deleting anthing addressed to SPAM@mydomain....

Does that make sense?

its probably a scam m8

most of these undeliverable mails are not ones you have sent

if you open it it will probably ask you to enter your signing in details, DON'T

it's similar to the blag emails from ebay/paypal asking you to re-enter stuff

some of the scammers get your details by asking you a question via ebay

i very often get emails via ebay asking me how much to ship to germany etc

I NEVER ANSWER, the uk only in my ads aint hard to understand lol

if using ebay safest way generally is to display the question/answer for all to see, and hide your email;)

most of its been answered here,

but its a known scam to send spam via bounce backs, you sned to a non working address with a valid return to address and you end up with the spam,

the ammount of time i spend on spam issues is ridiculous

It's not free anymore (which is a shame) but it isn't expensive and there is a free download trial so you can see if you like it:

Mailwasher lets you see the spam on your inbound mail server (and delete it) before it gets anywhere near your PC. I've used it since it was shareware!

I've still got the old Shareware version of Mailwasher if you'd like me to send it to you (1.3MB)
