I remove the coils one by one and

when I remove the middle coil cover which is at the passenger side the TIC noise from the engine stops. When i put it back the noise comes back.

Does this mean that the piston (or generally) the engine is fucked?

I own the car only for 2 days

Nope, it probably means that coil pack is fritzed..

Either it's arcing to the top of the spark plug (is the rubber boot on the coil pack burned at all?) or it's arcing internally - not uncommon when they fail.

Another test to try, is swop that coil pack with another, does the ticking follow the coil pack? If so, it's definitely the coil pack - replacements aren't cheap, but I'm sure someone who is breaking a car at the moment will have one for you.

Anyone local to where you are you can get to look at it? It doesn't sound major, so I wouldn't start thinking about screwed engines just yet smile.gif

Thanks for the info. I am so desparate. I dont know anyone here in London and its also weekend and this make me even more depressed.

The only think I did with the coil covers is to remove the wire that provides electricity to stop the piston from working. I didnt remove the coil. That particular coil (middle one) when its deactivated the noise stops. When i supply with electricity the noise comes back. I need to find some tools and try and swap them and see if the noise follows the coil. The car has only 48K miles.

sounds like the coil is not seated onto the spark plug properly.

There is loads of people here in London. Im sure you will be close to somebody

Can I have any phonenumber of anybody who can help me tomorrow please?

I'd put money down that it's just the coil pack. By pulling the plug off the coil pack, the piston is still moving, lifters are still operating valves - so that rules out piston problems, and it rules out a sticking lifter.

If the problem follows the coil pack (all you'll need is a ratchet and socket.. Err 10 or 12mm I *think*, or a spanner of the same size to remove the coil pack) then it's a fritzed coil pack.. Or as paul says, not seated correctly (in which case, when you swop it back, the problem will go away)

Not sure I'd really want to drive the car with a stuffed coil pack - if it's not firing/not firing properly you'll get unburned fuel hitting the cats.. However I have driven my car on 5 cylinders for a while and it was OK afterward..

If you're desperate for a coil pack, try a Nelson Mandela (thats a Main Dealer to you and me). The part number you require is 22448-30P01 (for a pre '94 car, 22448-30P03 for later models).

If you can get to Slough tomorrow (Sunday) with your Zed, then you can try one of my coil packs (they're all sat in a box in the garage after all) if you want - I'd come over, but I'll be dismantling more of my own car.. (Fingers crossed it's not raining, hey)

dont think your coilpack is broke, if it wasnt working it would not arc across to the plug and you would not get the clicking noise.

They can be tricky to seat onto the plug sometimes, I bet thats what it is

There's always the possibility for it to be arcing internally (between the coil and the plug top)... We should put money on it smile.gif

Then again.. I always lose bets smile.gif

Sure - I'll text you it in a min (when I find the mobile... Where'd it go...)

Whereabouts in London are you at the moment?

You can prove if it's the coil pack or not by changing it with one of your others... it it still happens on that cylinder its not the coil pack
