Noticed a bit of an odd problem today, whilst hooning around the car felt a little sluggish and I noticed that Im only getting around 5-6psi of boost, bugger i think, either a boost leak or safety boost (possibly from dett as its a bloody hot day...)

stop for a little and have a check over the visible TB and IC air pipes, no obvious problems so I carry on my merry way, problem now gone, back to pull 9psi....

little further down the road, im now only getting 5-6... arse...

turns out that if I stop the car and switch off, then start again I'm back to full boost, but not for very long!!

ECU diag comes back with 55 so all clear as far as the dett/knock sensor goes..

doubt its a boost leak otherwise I would never get the full 9psi...

Im certain im not missing a cylinder as the engine still seems to run very smoothly and I would expect the Cat temperature warning light to come on because of unburned fuel in the exhaust...

any other ideas as to what it could be?

cheers

dave

If the car is detting i dont think it will show up on the cu codes, only if th det sensor is faulty. what fuel are you using?

Did it start today?-has the weather been nice where you are?...............think you know where I'm going with this!

first occurence has been today I think.. and yes its very hot here..

So it could still be detting? any other way to tell without a conzult?

im using optimax, perhaps I should try some octane boosting stuff in there as well? Water temperature is about 90-95 degrees so engine is pretty toasty and the charge must be equally hot...

going to remove the mesh in front of the IC's tomorrow as well. was also going to have a play with an IC water jet kit I got a while ago but never fitted....

AFM/MAF I reckon...sh1te weater, nice weather....surprised theese things run at all.

MAF really? engine still runs really smooth though.. ? thought that would make it run rough...

Try disconnecting the knock sensor at the rear of the engine-if all o.k then your detting!

Find the cause tho' and reconnect the sensor!

ok will give that a go tomorrow. thank. erm... which ones the knock sensor connector! :)

just a thought, mine did the same when weather was nice after a crap spell.

Used to do what it wanted when it wanted (called it CHRISTINE!!). I sorted it with a clean up.

Swear theese cars have a built in weather sensor with a time delay.

Clean up your MAF connectors and even the filter. Reckon this may be your prob. Without a MAF it aint going to run right if at all...no wonder theese are soooooo expensive.

I will put that on my to-do list! :) cheers!

these cars dont start detting when we get half an hours sun,ide start checking for leaks (intermitent) then go from there. not looking forward to july-aug as the roads wil be full of detted zeds

hi mate the other day i went for a drive in the z rare thing these days,i hadnt drove her for about 10days! on full boost the power would cut out then kick back in on several occasion this happened, soon as i put some fresh optimax in it boosts fine no cutting of power, think my problem is more to do with slightly stale fuel leaning the mixture out a bit, dont know if thats causing any damage to my engine though

lol it was pretty toasty today, and i was gunning it quite on my private test track..! will check for leaks too though!

AFM would have nothing do do with Safety boost , if there was a problem with that it would not allow you to go over 3k rpm

this ones a little odd as your running slightly cooler plugs and optimax might be worth checking your timing is spot on at 15 degrees , i suppose its possible that you had a duff batch of optimax :(

I think I sussed it Ryan, removed the nasty mesh on my bumper and everything is running a lot cooler now and the low boost issue has gone away.

am I right in saying that if the car enters safety boost because it has detected detonation would swithing the engine off and starting again be enough to "clear" the error and start again with full boost (until it detected dett again)?

there were never any stored error codes in the ECU and from what I can tell from the searches I have done on here the ecu detecting dettonation from a properly working knock sensor and circuit wouldnt create an error code anyway.....

yes, if the ecu is satisfied that the det sensor is healthy then you will get no fault codes, and when detanation occurs it switches to safe mode (there is no code for this) when you turn the ignition off and back on and the ecu is still happy that the det sensor is healthy it will return to normal mode until detting happens again.

sounds like your fault was genuine detting.

hope removing the mesh helps you!

thanks fraser! looks like it was detting then. looking forward to another nice hot sunny day so I can test it a bit more!

at least I know my det sensor is working! :)

  • 1 month later...

Sorry to drag this up again, but as you may or may not know I bought Dave's Zed a while back. I'm having the same problem, and can't for the life of me figure out what it is :( It does it on warm or cold days.

Can put my foot down and get 7 psi and then literally the next time I do it get the full 9. Makes a BIG difference. I would say I'm getting full boost 1 time out of every 10 or so times I floor it.

I can really tell the difference between when it's boosting properly and when it's not. The recent Conzult check came up Code 55...

I'm perplexed, but it's really frustrating at the moment, as it feels like My beloved Zed is being held back, which it is being stuck at 7psi. It's also making me wary of overtaking etc. I never know if I'm going to get 7 or 9 pis when it kicksdown...

Any ideas what this is?

Thanks in advance for any ideas...

Jon.

and i no me 02 sensors are naffed,, well thanks to conzult , and a good friend!!

am getting done soon , will let you no if it cures,

Ok thanks : )

I've got it booked in to See Baggins on May 28th, I may just rest her up until he can look at her and hopefully fix it.

Looks like I won't make it to the next Santa Pod RWYB... never mind, plenty more this year

I hope Baggins knows what it is, poor girl is not well

Thanks for the suggestion Jaffa, I've done a search but can't find a pic showing me where they are... any ideas?

thx

WOOHOO!!! My baby is back!

Thanks for your advice Jaffa, I owe you a pint! I checked the solenoids, and they were okay, then I noticed as I was checking everything over this tiny little hose on the left there's two of em, 1 above the other, and the top one had come off, no sooner had I put it back on, the engine changed tone and sounded sweet, and a look inside on the dials was showing the oil pressure rising the right, to then hover around the middle. I took it for a little spin up the bypass and back and bugger me with a bloody big stick it feels like a different car! Pick up is so much faster, I was hitting 9psi most of the time, and it was going like shit iff a shovel! EXCELLENT!

Also the BOV's are MUCH louder, I don't know what this pipe does but it's definately what was wrong!

HAPPY HAPPY HAPPY!!!!

Thankyou so much all for helping, looks like I'll still be getting my chip and boost jets from Z-tech on the 28th! Yeah!

I love this club
