I was talking to a mate of mine the other day who runs a G reg non ABS Z - and he doest seem to get the crap brake fade at high speed that im getting. Frankly sometimes it seems as though my ABS is just rediculous and im not going to stop in time for the roundabout ahead. Is this a common problem with ABS models ? If so - whats the best way of sorting that abs out ?

I have got EBC Pads, and Rotora Braided lines -so my brakes at low speed are great - but on the motorway they are awful - any views/ideas ?

I tested the stopping distance from 60mph to zero on the zed using my Gtech pro and got 120ft. I tested my dads Focus its only 1 year old and got 130ft same day same road.

I use EBC green stuff for the pads on the Z everything else is stanard brakes.

I would say the brakes are quite good on the zed when they are in good working order. One thing that lets them down is the responsiveness, you have to press really hard on the zed brakes to get it to stop well, on the Focus you only have to tap the brakes and your face is on the wind screen!

Alex C - yeah I`ll get round to doing that soon.

Jack - the pedal holds solid and I did change the m/c pistons.

Homebrew - Cheers for that - must be down to my car then.

Thanks guys - still stumped.

Could it be ABS related??

I agree that the ZX brakes are actually pretty good - you would expect them to be in such a high performance car.

The problem is age - they deteriorate over the years and with a heavy fast car like the ZX, will suffer more with time than someone's E reg VW mentioned earlier. The rubber hoses will probably be stretched to b*ggery by now.......

Calipers sticking is the most common problem. One of my Mk3 Soops also suffered from this, but I've been lucky with the ZX so far.....

I've had my calipers checked out and they are fine, I also run Brembo slotted front discs with Stillen metal pads and on the rear, stock discs with EBC black-stuff pads and have no problems. They work just fine at low speeds and very well at high speeds. I could probably do with a fluid change now though and will go for the s/steel braided hoses at the same time.

I have something to say............ It's better to burn out than to fade away..... :tt2:

I dont know how to say this any clearer.

Apart from the brake lines and servo - EVERYTHINGS BEEN CHANGED

Calipers were sandblasted, blown out and brand new seals fitted. All pistons slid perfectly.New drilled and slotted Brembos fitted.Original rubber hoses put in dustbin - brand new Goodridge s/s hoses fitted.Non return or check valve on top of servo replaced with new one.Brand new dot 4 brake fluid used.Bled at least six times. And brand new pads fitted.New pistons fitted to brake master cylinder

Yes I would expect a high performance car like this to have at least good brakes but not poor

Not sure if this would help but did you bleed the abs unit?

No but I will try anything.

Its got to work after spending all this time and money on it

You are right it does say bleed at the ABS unit in the manual.

Cheers

Mark

what pads are you using?

PBR 2 low semi-met performance pads supplied by concept.
