Car over heated again due to a blown head gasket. Started the engine from cold and i've got a rattle coming from the engine. Oil pressure is low and it doesn't sound good. Any ideas. Nick

oil has overheated and cooked your big end bearings :headvswal

If its the big ends its not to bad because i'm virtually stripping the engine down to the crank when i'm going the heads. If there is anything else wrong with it. Its going, no excuses. Its by by zed. :(

I've left it over night now, have checked has plenty of oil and water, which it has. It will turn over, and nearly gets going but then dies. Will buggered big end bearings cause this? Or is something else dead? Nick

Anyone? I'm prepareing for the worst but can any one give me an idea what that might be. Please lads i need to figure out if i can keep the car.

Funnily enough, my big end has gone too (as it were). From what I've been told by ztech, it's new shells time, unless the originals have moved and naffed up the crank, in which case it's a new one of them.

He's quoted me around 550 for fitting new shells and another 250 if it needs a new crank.

It sounds like you've got a similar problem - don't try and start it again, you'll only naff it up more.

Far cheaper than getting a new car - so pay up and keep the zed - you know it makes sense.

seems to be common at the moment we have done 5 different cars big end shells in the last 4 weeks

You know what mate, thats exactly what i needed to hear! I love the car more than any car i've ever owned, i can't believe i even bought the trader today! Omg what was i thinking. Cheers mate. Nick

What if i've knackered the journals on the crank case, i've heard thats pretty much as terminal as it gets? And is it likely that i'm damaged them?

I've had quotes of around £850 +VAT for a secondhand engine with 3 months warranty. The fitting will obviously push it up a bit, but still cheaper than a second hand Ford Fiasco!

You couldn't even get it resprayed for that money.

I think i'll have to asses the damage when i strip the engine down and i'll take it from their. I've spent 5.5k since august and i'm gettin a tad annoyed with the spending.

Just wondering a few questions :-

1)what oil have the engines been using that have had this problem of bearings slipping

2)How often for oil change?(mileage in between)

3)What mileage is on the engines?

4)Any ideas as to why the oil should overheat n cook the bearings?

(apart from running Le Manns 24 hours)

5)Any major engine mods recently prior to this problem?

Prehaps we should keep a tag on how these problems are arising?

Could turn up some interesting stuff

Well mine's a 94 j spec tt manual. Its running castrol rs oil. Its got 58k on the clock. Its cooked the bearings due to a blown headgasket. No major mod's running 1 bar boost with typical mod's, induction, exhaust and chip

Oh and down pipes and decats and god it sounds good, when the dam thing works

Nothing Special - '90 Jap import, decat and zorstecs you could stick your head up!

Only just got the car, so (stupidly) had a full service (including cam belt) at a Main Stealer - not sure what oil they used, but they did say there was a bit of a rumble from the bottom end, hey presto 200 miles later bang rattle clonk. It's supposedly done 65Km but dealer reckons it's done double. The rest of it is fairly clean though.

Ryan's giving it a dose of looking at in a couple of weeks, just in time for some nice weather!

HHmmmm.....interesting...thanks chaps

I wonder if ryan knows anymore info or suspicions?.....

.............:rolleyes:Ryan ...........

Just to add to this "Big End Thing" Mine too seems to have a noisy end, 53k miles, jap TT 1994 model, had it 4 years, good oil allways, never over heated etc etc. Never really thrashed either. ????

well the cars that we have had in have either overheated to an extent that they have completelly cooked the oil or they have been fresh Jap imports history unknown , the bearings in the zed are very strong and will take alot of abuse but they don't like low oil likewise they don't like to be overfilled as this will cause premature failure and they also don't like dognuts as gravity forces the oil away from the bearings due to the sump arrangement , as for the oil used etc every case seems different so no further clues there

CheerZ ryan ;)

Interesting one this.....Maybe there is nothing to it in particuler then apart from the cooking of the oil as you say.

Wonder why the oil gets so low to begin with

Prehaps its an initial HGasket problem that leads to loss of oil thus overheating what is left

Either way would be interesting to keep building up info and diagnosis's just to see if it sheds any more light on the subject

Thanks ZedderZ
