Its a 94 j spec manual and I'm getting a distinctive whirring noise in 2nd and 4th, which gets a speeds up as rpm increases but doesn't get louder. Is it r.i.p gearbox?

Are you feeling any vibrations from this in the car, ie: does it feel like its underneith you..?? Just a thought.

Oh i forgot it's a TT. And just to clarify it doesn't do it in 1st 3rd or 5th. Any ideas?

Nothing out of the ordinary. Just appears to be noise at the moment. No excess vibration through the stick either. Changes in and out of both ok

Oh and it doesn't do it when the clutch is disengaged or in neutral. I can't think of any other symptoms at the moment. Any more ideas. Oh its only got 57k on the clock. Cheers chaps!

I was thinking Prop sharft bearings or rubbers :( but if you haven't got vibrations it might not be that

If it was the prop wouldn't it do it in every gear. Don't think its the syncro the gear change is smooth as silk. Apart from the gear's them selves what other rotating parts are there

I dont know if im barking up the wrong tree here but i think 2nd and 4th are on the same shaft, could be the carrier bearings are fooked.somebody corect me if im wrong.Best of luck anyway.

Makes sense. Transmission isn't my strong point. Would reverse be on the same shaft? But it makes sense. Cheers chap.

dont panic hear, not to long ago i had a lound whirring noise in 2nd and 4th removed centre console fitted gear gators down properly, and the mystertious noise dissapeared ;) sounds daft but this fixed it for me,remember removing both gators directly underneath- is the road.

ย

considering 2nd and 4th lets more noise through the gear selector leverage

ย

good luck hope thats all it is,use some superglue to keep a good seal for the gear gators

Like i said transmisson is not my strong point. Are you talking about where you take off the leather gaitor cover off and glue down the plastic gear "grid" that the stick slots into? Cheers mate.

hi mate remove the centre section so it looks like this remove radio etc

see gear linkage in pic and the 2 gators around it!

ย

overtime and age have a habit of working loose and creating noise fit them down tight infact to be double safe glue all around the edges, anywhere that air could get through

dont go to mad though :D HTH greg

Top stuff greg. Sounds like a job for tomorrow. Just knowing what the zeds rep for gearbox problems is enough to scare any one. I will let you know how it goes. Cheers again mate.
