I am looking for a pair of new rears (standard 245/45/zr16). I will get Michelin Pilot Sports top match the fronts I just had fitted.

Anyone know anywhere I can get the best price? I thought I might be able to save some cash by ordering them on-line but I can't find anywhere on the web.

Any advice?

Cheers

The best place I know for tyres is Micheldever in (I think) Hampshire. I believe they deliver. There is always a long queue of performance cars there on a Saturday.

The prices I was quoted on Thursday for 245/45ZR16s were (including VAT, valve, fitting, etc):

Bridgestone S02 Pole Position £122.72

Goodyear Eagle F1 £118.02

Sorry, Micheldever's phone number is 01962 774437

I just had some Fulda's fitted as they were recommended and cost me £89 each including fitting.

good luck this winter Stu.... ;)

just joking, but i hope they work out okay for you.

From personal experience, i always found that cheaper tyres, even well-known names, always perform well in the dry, but are extremely bad in the wet.

I just put S02's all round on my car and noticed the difference immediately.

Not as cheap as Dave got quoted, but the cheapest i found in my area were Southfields Tyre and Battery,

245/45/16 @ 142,

225/50/16 @ 116.5

balanced and fitted, inc vat.

I've always found Falken to be a VERY good cheaper tyre - Good grip in the wet or dry with the added bonus of being reasonably hard wearing. However, if pure performance is what you require (at the expense of longevity - 3000-4000 miles before the centre tread takes on a Roy Keane like baldness) Go for Goodyear every time.

I also ran on Fuldas then Falken for a few sets, I thought they were just as good and much cheaper, just unknown.

After putting S02s on I realised I'd been very very wrong!

Who stuck that glue on my tyres?

I have also heard the Mitchelin F1s are just as good, but I took the safe option.

Maybe that should read Goodyear, not Mitchelin.

until i go up to 18'' rims i'll stick to my usual second hand runners at jc tyres 30 quid a time for the amount of pounding my tyres get it doesnt matter what make they are to me.

Tooley,

Your are the "Anti-traction-control" master.

I can't remember if you have TC, but I know it would be off most of the time! LOL.

I have Fuldas on the front and SO2's on the back...The grip in the wet and dry from the Bridgestones is very good. The Fuldas were already on the car at the front and don't seem too bad

Fulda's all round. Running 285/35/18 rear and 245/40/18 front. Between 200-220 a corner. The well known premium tyres cost 300-400 a corner. Too much for my pocket!

Best quote so far is £345 for two Michelin Pilot Sports 245/45/ZR16 fitted.

Ouch.

Don't fancy the winter roads on the crap rubber and no tread I've got now, its got to be done.

I last paid £550 for a full set of S02s, vat & fitted. FYI, I also enquired on tyres for 18" wheels. £850-£900 a set... ouch.

If you haven't already gone and got them try

www.elitedirect.com or 01708 525577. They always have lots of stock and different types. I use Goodyear Eagle F1's. I wouldn't buy cheap or tyres that weren't highly rated (Bridgestone Pole Positions SO2 are also highly rated), because the difference is noticeable and adds so much to the driveability ALL the time, wet or dry.

Good Luck
