Start my car from cold, and i get good oil pressure

one it warms up i notice it drops, and drops to 0 if i idle after driving slowly (usually stuck behind somebody). Notice tapping from engine and a little oil spoke out of rear. Pull away drive slowely and next time idle, tapping and smoke gone but oil pressure a 0.

Boot the shite out of my car, the idle oil pressure back to normal, and idles at 1 on a jap spec guage.

Sound like the oil only really getting round my car properly when im doing more than 300rpm. i would say shite guage but tapping and smoke, tend to point at shite pressure.

Am i right in thinking oil pump needs replacing?

marcus if oil pump was faulty your engine would be dead i would of thought

i bet your gauge is shnite but smoke and tapping could be a few things so why not get ryan to take a look

Its usually the pressure sender. They dont last forever and at £80 each they are not replaced when needed.

Common faults with the pressure sender cause it to work at high pressure but not med to low. It reads correctly when the engine is first started as the oil pressure is hight do to the temperature but when the pressure reaches 60psi or so it drops to 0 on the gauge becasue the sender is fecked.

This is why people get new dials instead of repacing the sender unit. Nissan want £80 for a sender unit while, you can get a very good gauge for that money. I have a gauge which cost £40 with a sender, and replacement senders are £7 each.

I was sat at the lights today in N and the guage was at 2. Put it in D then it dropped to 0. My drive to work was outside rush hour traffic and apart from that one time the oil pressure reading was fine.

Ohh, and as for smoking it hasnt smoked for 2 weeks so i guess thats a seperate issue.

IMHO if your engine is worn, as in bearings, the higher revs enable the oil pump to overcome the leak past the bearing, but when the eingine is going slow the pump cant generate enough flow to overcome the leak. This would also account for the rattles, lifters need oil pressure to work. Might also be worn pump, blocked filter (rare but possible) but I dont know really. Hence your symptoms???

Marcus, find someone with a test gauge and see what the pressure is!

bet the senders fooked! ;)
