 Has anyone done this or does it require a special tool?

Hi Mate ..

Normally you would use a bearing/hub puller but sometimes a little tap and they come off easy, just try not to loose the woodruff key in the end of the crankshaft..... ;)

Hi Andy. I bought one today but there's not enough clearance to get the jaws of the puller behind the sprocket.

Try giving it a tap from the back or side but dont tap it too hard..

It should come loose on the vg30 engines the crankshaft to sprocket are just interference fit....so a few light taps should do it then just slide it off....

If you were close to me i'd remove it for you....

;)

Hi Andy - it came off pretty easily when I gave it a tap.

when you got it off

did yours have a woodruf key as was stated in earlier reply

cos mine didnt have one

Yes, mine did have a key. I suppose as long as the crank pulley was tight enough then the timing belt sprocket wouldn't have moved but then again, I wouldn't have risked leaving it out!!

Hi Steve, you don't work for HSS Tool Hire do you - LOL!

I'll give you a call tomorrow. I can leave work for an hour at dinnertime if that suits you?

Thanks again

You're getting confused between the sprocket ang the pulley ;) The sprocket is the one that the cambelt goes onto, the pulley drives the ancilliaries....

FFS you MUST have the key in BOTH of these, failure to do this will cause one of two results, depending on which is left out:

No sprocket key - your engine will die VERY rapidly, more than likely beyond economical repair - MUCH worse than a cambelt snap.

No pulley key - the pulley will undo itself pretty quickly and come off - the damage it will do doing this could be quite drastic...

Andy you just reminded me of what happened to my Citroen CX years ago. The sprocket bolt came loose and this DID have a woodruff key in it! I was blissfully unaware that the pulley was slowly eroding the end of the crank away until one day the engine started overheating and the battery light came on. I ended up having to replace the whole fooking crankshaft so after remembering this, my advice is not to run it at all. I'd hate to see a  post!

ffs your getting me woried now

i recently had to change water pump

to do this the crank pulley has to be removed

as far as i can remember there was no woodruf key

ive had a look in the manual and there is no mention of a key on the pulley

There's definately one in there cos I was looking at the two 5 mins ago still sat in the end of my crank! Your crank pulley bolt is probably very tight and so you've got away with it so far but seriously for the amount of time it takes to install one, I would definately get it done.

Yep you must have a key in both the sprocket and pulley - they're there for a reason ;) There's considerable torque required to turn all the ancilliaries - alternator, water pump, fan, PS pump, Aircon compressor.... As Dave mentioned, if the pulley rotates on the crank it will slowly but surely wear it away and there's only one solution to that - it aint pretty....
