Hi All,

After nearly a year of waiting (where everything that could possibly go wrong in the import process, did go wrong) my 300zx import has arrived! :hyper: ... and it's a beaut!

It's a 1996 black NA, it passed the MOT/SVA but the company (SVA UK) told me that there is a problem in the compression in on of the cylinders, could this just be because the car had not been driven in about nine months? Is there any good mechanics in (or around) London I can take it to to have a look (and for a service).

Thanks

p.s. anyone thinking of importing a Z: make sure you're not in a rush, as it could take ages...

Welcome

I'm not clever enough to help you with the specofic problem, but my recently imported NA had a few running problems for a few days. Often the fuel is 'off'. Try a full tank of clean Optimax

Cheers

Compression test is effectively a test of how well the cylinders are sealed. If there is low compression then that cylinder is not forming a good seal for the explosion to take place, thus you loose power cause some of the energy escapes. Depending on where the energy is escaping from the problem can be big or small. It is natural to get some variation from one cylinder to another - that is why you need to know the figures.

Energy is escaping either into the bottom end past the piston rings or into the top end past the valves.

Hope this helps

Oh by the way what is the stock compression ratio please? (minor hijack :nono: ).

Depending on what your gauge reads:

Compression pressure: kPa (bar,kg/cc,psi)/ 300rpm

Standard: 1285 (12.85,13.1,186)

Minimum: 981 (9.81,10.0, 142 )

Diff between cylinders: 98 ( 0.98, 1.0, 14 )

Remember to use a fully charged battery to turn engine over.

If compression on one or more cylinders is low pour a small amount of engine oil into cylinder through spark plug hole and retest. If this helps, piston rings may be worn or damaged.

If pressure stays low a valve may be sticking or seating improperly.

If compression in adjacent cylinders is low and adding oil doesn't help compression there may be a leakage past the gasket surface.

Hope this helps,

Simon.

Thanks for all the advice, will probably go down to Ztech for a once-over when I get some plates (still waiting on DVLA).
