Hi,

My 89 Jap Import is fitted with a purple coloured window film on the tailgate and 2 rear quarter light windows.

How easy is it to come off ??? Or how hard ??

Would reckon it might be easier to remove the tailgate and do it on a flat surface. ???

Dont want to scrape it with the fear of damaging the heater wires, Any chemicals ?? Thinners, or is it the old hairdryer ??

Pretty certain there was a post on this before.

Any help or past experiences will be most welcome. :)

Alan......

i had black on mine it just peeled of.

or you use a hairdryer/heat gun, i have heard that if you throw talc/flour cant remeber which it stops it melting onto the glass.

if you get no joy i have a m8 who does it for a living so i will ask him tommorow how to get it for you.

Your best bet is to first remove the film (hair dryer may help) This will however leave all the glue on the windows. This is a B***ch to get off & will need a whole load of rags & white spirits. You may well have to do it more than once as the white spirits softens the glue so you can rag it off but doesn't remove it on it's own. Only do a small area at once or the glue re-sets when the spirit evaporates & you will get nowhere fast. I tried some sticker removal solvent but found it no better than cheap spirit's & stank like f**k. Good luck mate this is one job you will only want to do once.

Don't know about your tailgate ( don't envy you the job) When I removed the film from the doors glass it more or less came off in one piece but the adhesive was a terrible job.I ended up using white spirit to try to loosen it then using a brand new stanley blade to avoid scratching the glass.Hope you find an easier way.Good look!

Think it will be worthwhile taking photos along the way to help others ???

Use Brake Cleaner to get the glue off when you have peeled off the film using a hairdryer

Another solution. :D

Cheers mate, will be trying them all as I know it is going to be a pig of a job.

Never thought of brake cleaner tho ! Mmmmmm ;)

Alan.......

did my rear window hairdryer worked fine, but to get the glue off aaah, ended up useing Mr Muscle kitchen cleaner (the Orange type) worked a treat

I know it sounds a bit dangerous but wouldn't petrol be a good solvent for the glue ?

Obviously NO SMOKING while working would have to be a golden rule !

Explain! ;)

Well I wouldn't have thought a petrol soaked rag in one hand and a fag in the other would be a good combo - but I might be wrong :)

Meths is brill for getting glue removed, but have to agree that disc brake cleaner is the mutts.

I'm a fan of brake cleaner for all sorts of jobs.

But carb cleaner is the daddy when it comes to organic solvents - it does evaporate quickly though, sends you doolally with the vapous and can harm any plastics it touches.

Right then,

I take it getting high on the fumes is the best way to go then !! :nana2:

Dont light up a fag or drop anything on the plastic !!

Jeez, this is starting to sound fun !! Bet I regret saying that.

Thanks guys, hope to make a start at the weekend.

Will definetely reply on this post and let everybody know how it goes !!

Thanks again,

Alan........

if you pop into your local bodyshop and ask them if you can have some gun wash, this will remove the glue without much hassle, but it can be a bit messy when the glue melts.

Ooohhh!!!

Gunwash, We have it in 25 ltr barrels at the work !!! 10 BARRELS AT A TIME.

Gonna get high next weekend for sure !!! :D

Alan........

thats the stuff, it works a treat, we use it when removing the decals off the police cars(for work of course).
