Hi

please help,my engine 'seems' to keep flooding. it idles very rough then eventually stalls. so i bought some new plugs took it for a drive and it ran fantastic, started it up next day... ...it was crap again. so then i had various split hoses changed, tuned up, and even another set of spark plugs, driving it home from garage it drove fantastic, gets in it next day... ...crap again. ive had various codes on ECU and by cleaning connections seem to have sorted them, the only one that still keeps cropping up is '12'(air flow meter) plus the car wont run above 2500revs "so it is the AFM" i hear you all cry... thing is when the AFM is NOT working car seems to idle fine (although its crap when reved). when it IS working thats when the engine seems to eventually flood and when i take the plugs out there as black as coal. im very close to torching the b@#@#rd thing (excuse my french).

can anyone help restore my faith in my once trusty steed.

cheers si

p.s. can i take this opportunity to thank jeff and jamie at zedworld who have been fantastic helping me sort and elimenate problems over the phone cheers lads

Telling us what codes you got may help?? Could be a number of things wrong without them....

sorry, that would be a good idea, throttle position sensor, engine temp sensor

forgot to mention it had an unsteady idle for a while before probs started but then just went crap all of a sudden

If you have a problem with the AFM then the ECU goes into a get-you-home type mode and doesn't let the car rev over 2500 etc. So, first you need to get that sorted, then start looking for less obvious stuff if you still have problems.

dodgy connection to the ptu? i had similar problems - i kept knocking the connection out the side. there's a smallish silver box at a 45 degree angle on the front of the engine, driver's side. check that the two connections (one either side - especially the right-hand side) are plugged in snugly.

A common thing that is often overlooked is the big blue connector that is plugged into the ECU.

Especially if it throws all sorts of errorcodes, it's often a case of a loose (or too tight) ECU connector

See if "wiggling" the wiring harness that goes into the connector/ecu makes the engine run different.

Cheers I'll give them a go. I can also hear the fuel pump continousley, is this normal? as I've never noticed it before because I've usually got the stereo on. It primes itself as normal but the there's a quiet buzzing as the engine is running

Is the aux. fan on all the time also ?

In this case the ECU is in failsafe mode and the problem is either ECU itself or main wiring harness/connector

is the aux fan the small electric one or the big belt driven one at the front of the engine bay. the only one thats always spinning is the large belt driven one. (sorry for sounding thick)

If there is a problem with the temperature sensor, it wont startup or you will really struggle to get it going.

i agree with the "try a AFM" theory.

as for it idling better when the AFM is NOT working, i would think that is because the ECU is ignoring the AFM signal & working out how much fuel to inject based on a map dependant on throttle position.

well it seems to start up ok and idle ok but its a bit rough when you rev it and wont go over 2500 revs it sounds as though you keep pressing and depressing throttle quickly... if you know what i mean

the wierd thing was that when the AFM was working the car wouldnt idle very well then it would seem to flood but now the AFM isnt working it idles fine.

looks like im gonna have to make the plunge and get a new AFM. I just thought id ask you guys first what with all the different codes and dodgy connections. cheers lads
