What exactly is a boost controller? What does it do? I'm guessing it's something to do with controlling boost lol

And finally, when is it suitable or advantageous to fit one?

So how does it control boost? Is it something the driver adjusts on the go to get more or less boost? Or is it some kind of electronic thing that allows the turbos to work through a wider rev range???

I'm confused here!!??!!

As always...

never used one , i have boost jets (as they are cheep) but from what i know it alows you to set boost levels etc .someone on hear should give you some more info, but if you want to up the boost your need your ECU chipped to allow more fuel etc

its a way of increasing peak boost. it holds the turbo wastegates shut until it reaches the level you have set it to.

as standard (assuming the cars not in saftey boost) the turbos will produce around 9.5psi of boost, at this point the wastegates open preventing any higher boost.

with the EBC connected you can set the boost level you want, usually around 14psi for standard tubs/injectors.

the only real danger (except getting greedy and risking too high boost levels) is that it overrides safety boost so if there was a problem with your engine which your ecu picked up, it couldnt cut the boost to 7.

Ah ha so it's just like an adjustable chip thingummy for boost pressure then? So why have a boost controller? What's wrong with just chipping the ECU for boost as well as an other mods?

AFAIK the ecu doesnt control boost (dont ask me how it activates safety boost tho :p ) nor does it know the current boost pressure. mods-wise you could have loads of fancy bits like intakes, zorsts, internals, etc. but your tubbies would still be running 9psi when they could be taken higher with boost jets or controller.

oh and ive not even got a controller in! (yet ;) )

Oh i see! It's all becoming clear. So chipping the ECU takes advantage of induction kits, exhausts etc but to raise boost pressure I need a boost controller. Have I got this right?

boost jets are a (very) cheap 'n' easy way to up your boost (by slowing down how quickly the wastegates open) but they aren't as controllable as a, err, controller! Chris@GetGReddy may soon be flogging some nice Blitz controllers.

Basiccally yes-If you raise the boost you need to upgrade the ecu to prevent a lean condition.

IIRC the only way the ecu controls boost is when safety boost comes in-this is done by way of boost solenoids.HTH.

1st thing to do is fit exhaust&induction then get the car serviced and checked over make sure there are no known faults! ie ecu errors.also make sure cooling is ok most important thing to get right IMO then think about chips&boost controllers then think about new tyres cos you will need them.Check andy duffs write up in maintance section ;)

Thanks for the tips, chaps. Now I just have to pay for it all!

Thats my department :nana2: give me a call when your ready :)

Dont forget to get an aftermarket boost GAUGE so you know what the pressure's really at, as the stock gauge is pants (well it is on mine)

Pete

agree with pete! boost gauge and more importantly water temp gauge it will be to late when your car overheats and the stock gauge doesnt move

erm, some controllers (like the profec e-01) have a really good live time boost level display with some additional funky functions. It's more expensive, but saves on the extra boost gauge.

No-one mentioned the problems with over boost with jets yet! - watch your turbo seals if your running 14 psi on stock tubs and jets!!!!!!!

I'm assuming the whole turbo system has to be completely serviced before all this happens. New hoses, seals, oil change etc. Anything else?
