GTR brakes fitted!

Posted to our local 300 mailing list - FYI - I've been on a mission to make my 300 stop and I scored a set of R32 GT-R calipers with Apexi Slotted rotors. I've cooked my stock brakes so many times it's not funny so decided to up the braking power. The final setup will be Mintex 1144 for road use, Ferodo DS3000 for track use with HTX 114 fluid, stainless lines, along with a brake stopper mounted to the front right strut tower. Note I'm not rich otherwise I'd have an AP 6 pot setup with 360mm x 36mm discs.. but thats $8000NZD I don't have.

====================================

They rotors are visibly *much* bigger than the stock rotors. The stock jobs look pretty frickin weak in comparison. An interesting thing is that the silver z which had (what we thought) was the exact same setup as I scored - Apexi Slotted rotors w R32 calipers, the rotors were different. The ones I've got had much thicker rotor facings, and the area between the vanes was smaller, whereas the Silver Z has much thinner facings. But the rotors are the same width. One for the books.

Which works better ? Who knows.

Anyway the install was a bit fiddly, a couple of things that aren't immediately apparent:

- The rotors won't fit on with the cooling back plates on the stock rotors so you've got to cut those stupid things off.

- The calipers are slightly further away from the hub you've got to slightly bend the brake tube to fit the brake nipple thingy on ithout

cross threading it. Don't cross thread it otherwise shes f**ked. Two sets of Hands are better here.

- If you've got little clearance between the alloy and the original caliper (say 2mm) then you'll need spacers. Luckily mine fit on weet

as.

- Paint the calipers before you put them on, you won't want to take them off after!

So what are they like ? Well I thumbsucked and chose a set of partially worn Pagid RS4-4 Pads (had a box of allsorts of Pagids to

choose from). No organic material in sight. Initial bite is getting better, stone cold they stop okay, but starting getting some heat into them and they start behaving better. I did go round the block going

nuts doing stops using ABS all the time and streets ahead of the old setup once heat was in there.. Modulation was good I could choose to either leave my foot there and let ABS do the work, or do it myself without too much drama. Initial pedal feel is about the same. Tomorrow the pads should be fully bedded and hello country roads.. We didn't have any good fluid (Elf 5.1 doesn't count in my books), so getting some HTX114 and will completely flush the whole system along with the Mintexes life will be good.

Now about this jiff/exhaust cannister thing.. I'd driven over some paint and my entire subframe/exhaust was splattered in the stuff.. suffice to say it was only a 10min job cleaning until Harvey wandered out from the office and started giving me shit about doing a Half Arsed job - he started calling me Mike etc - so had to do a proper

job. We won't mention disconnecting seat controls now will we Harvey

LOL !

Whos going to organise the brake stopper purchase ? I'm down for one also, I suddenly realised how much pressure I was putting into the firewall on cold pads. Side effect of going to the gym I guess..

Also as for the venturis underneath the intercoolers.. what a waste of time.. there's no way I'd get any decent ducting for air from that. My theory is a Gracer front end, some big holes in the liners, and some

ducting through from infront of the rad (somehow), going below the undertray just won't work practically speaking.

Heres some pictures that show the size difference of R32 GTR and Z32 disc's:

gtr_break_11.jpg Z32 left R32 GTR right.

gtr_break_12.jpg Aluminum Z32 caliper(Iron version same size).

gtr_break_15.jpg To fit the GTR disc's you have to bend or cut back the stone guard.

brake stopper purchase

You can get these over here for about £70(about $243NZD)

This the http://www.SE-Nissan.com type. This the info they give:

"This polished cast alloy brace fits to the inner wing and eliminates movement of the master cylinder under heavy braking..."

I have that master cylinder brace fitted and I can highly recommend it.

f**k me dead, you guys get raped. We're getting some brake stoppers done for $100NZD or under, bit cheaper than $243NZD. Infact if I had my old garage I would've fabricated one for $20 worth of metal and bolts and painted accordingly. But I'm more than happy to pay someone else to do it now that I don't have free time.

wooahhh agricultural modifications - just spotted the pic of the backing plate still on with the rotor. Who's car is that ?

It's much cleaner if you split the plate on the side of the hub (where the metal is at it's thinnest on the front of the hub, about 3/4in wide, grind it to thin it out then split it with a cold chisel and rip the plate off.. much cleaner than leaving a shonky piece of cut up metal in place!

Yup we get f*cked over on most things over here(petrol, car tax,car insurance) frown.gif

Those pics are from a japanese Zed site http://www.sun-inet.or.jp/~falcon/club/

Do the R32 brakes fit under standard Z wheels or do you need larger diameter rims

I believe they will fit, you may have to shave the Nissan logo off the caliper as I think it's too close to the inside 'spokes' of the alloy - either that or get 3-5mm spacers. Diameter is not the issue.

But if you're running standard alloys do yourself a huge favour and get some 17ers. The grip levels are outstanding compared to 16ers.

I've done the R33 conversion to 330mm discs and left the shield in place - the fact is the shitty british roads make this plate pretty necessary with all the mud etc etc etc....
